Good budget flash with interesting vertical tilting feature
Wow, this flash is much bigger than expected. From the pictures I probably was expecting a slightly larger version of the Speedlite 400 - but this one feels like 3 x the size. From looking at other offers, I assume that this flash is identical (or at least very, very similar) to the Bower SFD450N Digital Dedicated Autofocus i-TTL, a flash with not many favorable reviews.I have used the XIT XTD 130N only today (so no chance to comment on long term performance), and have following first observations. Larger than expected, yet still smaller than conventional flash designs like Speedlite 600 for example. Smart design, combining bouncing capabilities with rotational vertical tilting feature. Yes, it really works. It is straight forward and easy to operate - no programs to scroll through for adjustments (no LCD screen either), just a couple of buttons - that's it - so ideal for beginners. I used it in TTL and M modes with a D60, D 90, D5000 & D5500 and the results have been good. Due to the maturity of the design, the flash itself is closer to the lens - so likelihood of red-eye is larger. However, multiple flash's (as in red eye reduction flash) can be actuated through the camera menu, just chose red eye flash. For a $ 40 flash it seems well built, and I have never seen a similar tilting function that works really well. In summary - a good budget flash with basic functionality that is working well and probably best purchased as 2nd flash. If you need one main flash only, I would recommend to consider other and more conventional designs. I personally have several, but use mostly the Mcoplus MCO-430 I-TTL Auto-Focus Dedicated Flash Speedlite which is available for less than $ 50 and to me the ideal larger-, yet still somewhat portable flash.
