When using a good power supply, the DAC worked well (at least with bluetooth, the only mode I could test this way). I have no doubts that when working correctly this is a decent sounding DAC, especially for the money. Drivers do seem to be needed for the DAC to work properly, and these are downloaded from the SMSL website.When connected to either my laptop (Razer Blade Pro 17) or Thunderbolt Dock (CalDigit TS4) there was a lot of noise in the signal, sounding like a sawtooth wave. Very loud and made music unlistenable. I tried using the aux power input with the good power supply (literally a 5V USB tower from Poundland), but this didn't fix anything. The noise was audible at every volume level, and was present even if another input was selected and/or nothing was playing.I returned it for these reasons. Note for UK customers when returning, it's international post to France (or at least was for me). This makes the return a little more complicated, and I had to go to the UPS drop-off twice, since they won't take it without 3 identical customs forms taped to the outside of the return. This contradicts the Amazon instructions to have 1 on the outside, 1 to give to the shop, and 1 on the inside. The shop said they've seen this before with amazon returns. This isn't the first return I've had with Amazon where their instructions weren't completely correct.Final point, the support website listed by Amazon for SMSL is a dead website, giving a 403 error in Chinese. I found support through SMSL on AliExpress, who seemed to say that the issue with laptops was to be expected. This was not made clear in any of the product listings. I'll be replacing with a DAC that doesnt use the USB data input as a power source.

Having bought other smsl products which have been fantastic this is a disaster.Tried through three different android devices which all work fine through my other smsl dac this was constant popping crackling and all out break down if digital signal into noise.Read many reviews which were glowing... what a let down.. returned.

The M300 SE is a very nice sounding DAC with ultra-low distortion and good dynamics. I've used the USB and optical inputs and soundstage/imaging from the SE output is really good. I've ran this DAC with various class D amplifiers and it has worked very well as a pre-amp with fixed output. I think this is a warm sounding DAC, it does not sound dry or clinical. The CS chip is a dac/amp chip which may explain the warmer sound. The build is quite solid and attractive, a good quality 3.5mm to RCA will work well. No room for full L/R RCA outputs on back with full XLR out, and XLR to RCA will defeat the purpose, it will become lower output at the conversion. I briefly have used the headphone out - the sound seemed good but I didn't buy this for HP usage so cannot comment, I don't own audiphile HP units. Any 5V USB charger can be used to power this unit.Of note, the remote is quite responsive and works well. And also slightly larger. I found it can be used with other SMSL products if needed. The volume is displayed for less than 1 second when you change it, and is not the default display. That is a minor complaint, as the entire display can be turned on/off. A very good DAC that really sounds great but also detailed, a lot to like and a very decent value.

Je ne vais pas m'attarder sur la qualité sonore : toues les équipements ne serait-ce qu'à moitié compétents équipés de puces audio dédiées récentes ont une précision qui excède à peu près tous les casques ou baffles possibles. Et ici c'est du SMSL donc rien à signaler.L'intérêt de ce modèle, c'est une connectique peu commune dans cette gamme de prix : des sortie speakers en XLR, et une sortie casque en 4.4mm (en plus de la 6.35mm). Très pratique si on avait déjà du matériel utilisant ces normes. Je retrouve donc une sortie audio 'clean', alors qu'avant il fallait souvent jongler avec le volume pour éviter les bruits parasites quand mes baffles étaient branchées directement sur mon PC.Bonus : ce modèle possède un deuxième port USB-C juste pour l'alimentation, ce qui permet de l'utiliser avec un téléphone ou une tablette qui n'aurait pas forcément les moyens d'alimenter directement cet ampli.Seul point noir : l'interface pour sélectionner l'entrée ou la sortie active est un peu relou.

Bin eher zufällig auf diesen SMSL M300se DAC-AMP gestoßen auf der Suche nach günstigen voll-symmetrischen DACs mit SPDIF-Eingang für einen meiner symmetrischen Kopfhörer-Verstärker (ich habe einige DACs und Amps und das hier war eher für ein Bastel-Projekt). Der hier war mir völlig neu... die M300/M500er Serie von SMSL ist ja eher nicht so günstig und der hier tanzt aus der Reihe und ist unschlagbar nahe an der 100 Euro Klasse. Nun, der M300SE hat ja auch "nur" einen (eigentlich zwei) Cirrus Logic CS43131 DAC Chips. In diesen Chips ist u.a. der Kopfhörer-Verstärker schon direkt eingebaut. Ich habe eigentlich gute Erfahrungen mit älteren SMSL DACs (zB SU-8) und deren Amps sowie genau diesem CS-DAC chip von meinem Dongle-DAC iBasso DC04pro also habe ich mal bestellt. Die Erwartungen waren nicht sehr hoch - u.a. weil sogar der kleine Dongle noch Ausgangs-OP-Amps zur Verstärkung zusätzlich hat, die hier zumindest nicht genannt werden. Aber mein Hauptzweck ist ja sowieso die Nutzung als DAC.Die Box ist angenehm klein aber robust und wirkt wertig verarbeitet. Knöpfe und Encoder sind gut bedienbar. Schon mal ein erster Pluspunkt. Das Display ist klein aber recht gut lesbar nur etwas unsinnig im Informationsinhalt: Lautstärke und Output wird z.B. in winzig oben links angezeigt während der Input in großen Lettern in der Mitte prangt (wenn man die Lautstärke ändert, wird sie aber auch kurz in gross angezeigt). Die Fernbedienung ("RC-8C") ist Ok; Plastik halt aber vernünftig belegt. Einige Tasten steuern leider direkt auch andere Geräte; bei mir einen Burson Soloist 3x GT (da aber wohl niemand anders diese beiden Geräte im gleichen IR-Sichtbereich betreiben dürfte, ist das wohl kaum ein Problem). Sollte man den DAC zB für aktive Speaker im Wohnzimmer betreiben, sollte man das aber ggfs. beachten bzw. prüfen ob andere Geräte die IR-Codes missverstehen.Strom kommt zusammen mit den Daten via USB-C Input. Netzteil ist nicht dabei. Sollte die Quelle für USB-Audio (PC, Handy,... ) nicht genug Saft liefern, kann der "Aux"-USB-C-Input (nur für Strom) z.B. mit einem alten Handy-Ladeteil zusätzlich genutzt werden. Den kann man auch (allein) benutzen um den DAC per COAX oder TOSLINK zu bespielen wenn man USB-Audio nicht nutzt (meine Hauptanwendung). Alle Inputs waren stabil auch bis zu 192 kHz PCM; DSD benutze ich nicht und MQA erst recht nicht.Bluetooth-Empfang scheint nur SBC-Codec zu nutzen - wohl ein Opfer des Preises - daher eher unbrauchbar und nicht weiter getestet.Etwas ungünstig ist die Ausführung des SE Line-Out-(bzw. Pre-Out-)Ausgangs als 3.5mm Buchse hinten. Zwei RCA/Cinch-Buchsen passten wohl leider nicht mehr. Sollte man z.B. einen Sub-woofer zu zwei Speakern an den XLRs betreiben, braucht man wohl Adapter. Ist aber nur eine minimale Unbequemlichkeit, da ja SE-Ausgang technisch dadurch nicht eingeschränkt wird; ggfs. braucht man halt ein 3.5mm-auf-2Cinch-Kabel. Die XLR-Ausgänge sind ebenso wie die KH-Ausgänge (4.4mm balanced und 6.3mm unbalanced) stabil und ohne Spiel.Die Menü-Führung ist eigentlich einfach aber ein paar komische Abhängigkeiten gibt es da; zB ausgeliefert wird der M300se mit der Output-Option "ALL", d.h. KH-Ausgänge und Pre-Outs hinten sind beide simultan aktiv. In dem Zustand kann man nicht auf fixed Line-Out-Level schalten- das geht nur, wenn er die "LINE"-Option gewählt ist... ist auch vernünftig, das Menü erlaubt aber die Umschaltung - sie hat nur keinen Effekt (das gleiche gilt umgekehrt für die "HP"-Output-Funktion).Zum wichtigsten; dem Klang. Ein DAC sollte natürlich keinen "Klang" haben ... und da ist er gar nicht so schlecht. Zunächst mal ist er praktisch rauschfrei als DAC per XLR. Die Auflösung und Bühne ist ok. Ganz neutral transparent kommt er mir nicht vor; etwas künstlich "aufgehübscht" (pseudo-energetisch-dynamisch) aber alles noch im Rahmen.Diese (Fun-)Signatur ist aber definitiv aus dem KH-Ausgang zu hören. Will nicht sagen, dass das schlecht ist - ist halt ein bisschen ein künstlicher WOW-Faktor aber dann letztlich doch leicht unsauber/verwaschen. Für die Preisklasse und als Dreingabe zum DAC aber trotzdem ausgezeichnet. Erstaunlich ist, dass der (symmetrische) KH-Ausgang sogar recht stark ist und unerwarteterweise auch einen meiner 300 Ohm KH mittlerer Sensitivität ganz gut antreibt - Subbass kommt da natürlich nicht rüber aber für die "normale" Nutzung sind dynamische KH ganz gut daran. Magnetostaten brauchen meist mehr Strom und sind nicht zufriedenstellend an dem M300se. Ich nehme an, das ist auch ein Effekt der automatischen Impedanz-abhängigen Gain-Schaltung die offenbar verbaut wurde (so deute ich jedenfalls den Werbetext) - KH niedriger Impedanz aber geringer Sensitivität funktionieren dann halt nicht gut. Der 6.3mm SE-Ausgang ist von der Leistung natürlich höchstens für IEMs und sensitive KHs geeignet. Insgesamt ist der M300se als Kopfhörer-Verstärker für "normale" KH aber erstaunlich gut geeignet (insbesondere wenn sie balanced verkabelt sind).Also ich bin positiv überrascht von dem SMSL M300se. Preisbedingt gibt es ein paar Einschränkungen und Kompromisse aber für die Kernfunktionen als symmetrischer DAC, (Pseudo-)Pre-Amp für z.B. Speaker mit TOSLINK-Input und Fernbedienung und/oder einfacher KH-Amp am Schreibtisch ist er wirklich gut. Ohne MQA-Lizenz würde er wahrscheinlich nichtmal 100 Euro kosten und dafür ist er einfach erstaunlich.

Very solid dac/amp. Not enough juice for what I need, and no gain controls (that's on me for not checking).This dac is perfect for iems however
