"Mr. Hammond, after careful consideration, I've decided NOT to endorse your park."
This classic 1993 movie started a general public dinosaur obsession and a multi-picture film franchise. No one had ever seen anything like it when it came out. It blended a fascinating idea from a Michael Crichton book on reverse genetically engineering dinosaurs back into the modern world and (for its time) stunning industry cutting edge CGI and puppetry effects. Add in the deft movie making experience of a Spielberg crafted entertainment and Jurassic Park dominated the box office as well as grabbing most of the sound and special effects awards of that year. I still remember my "whoa" reaction in the theatre to the first big dino reveal. Then, I remember racing out to buy the laser disc release a year later and reveling in the experience at home. Well, this 4K HDR10 remaster puts the laser disc and subsequent DVD releases to shame and does solidly improve on most counts over the Blu-ray that is included in this single movie release. The brightly colored SUV railed-electric tour vehicles really pop as well as various green shades of jungle. 35mm grain is very lightly present with no real disastrous edge enhancements. The night scene with the T-rex has great blacks and shadow detail. And the fantastic totally immersive DTS:X surround sound roars and booms without distortion or overwhelming the clear dialog. This is definitely the best this movie has looked and sounded in the home. A solid recommendation to add to any collection.

A Tad Disappointing
My title refers to the video and audio quality of this 4K disc, not the movie itself, which is another Spielberg directed epic that needs no introduction. The transfer is... fine. It's a step up from the Blu-ray to be sure. But, it just doesn't "pop" like I thought it would. If you're a collector of 4K UHD Blu-ray movies, you know the joy and wonder that a reference quality disc can bring, and well... this one falls short of that high bar.And the audio is suspect as well. Surprisingly, the only option available in English is the DTS-HD MASTER 7.1ch @48kHz. So, if you're audio equipment doesn't support that mix, you're out of luck. My system's highest available codec is DTS-X and played on that setting the audio is boxy and shallow sounding with a vague echo. Changing over to basic two channel stereo helped a bit, but not by much. This is unfortunate and perhaps unacceptable. The average viewer does not have a 7.1 setup in their living room, that's why most discs have multiple options to choose from.Just a warning for people who care about such things.

A groundbreaking film
Now 30 years old, the film marked a milestone in special effects technique, with the then recent innovation of computer graphics permitting realistic portrayal of the dinosaurs, supplemented by mechanical effects of great sophistication. What makes the movie special is the superlative story-telling of Mr. Spielberg, who leads his cast through a rousing, sometimes terrifying journey through this unique amusement park. Filmed in Kauai, the live scenery is breathtaking. The film’s impact is further supported by a wonderful John Williams score. I heartily recommend this entertaining film, but caution its realism may not be suitable for very young children. Even the adults who saw it in a theatre so many years ago often screamed from fright. Much better for this young group is “E.T.” That happens to be my favorite Spielberg film.
