The importance of trace nutrients in the diet in both health and disease
Micronutrients in Health and DiseaseThis volume is an impressive compendium of evidence documenting the importance of a range of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals that are essential in small amounts for maintenance of a healthy organism. The utility of a mixture of such micronutrients is described in normal individuals, and also their applicability in contributing to treatment of a large number of diseases and conditions is discussed. These include all the most prevalent diseases such as cancer, coronary and circulatory disorders, arthritis diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s diseases). The potential positive effects of micronutrients on less common brain diseases such as autism, prion disease, Huntingdon’s disease are also explained. Prior to this, a good background is given as to exactly what reactive oxygen species and inflammatory processes are and how they can be harmful. Evidence of the applicability of micronutrient administration is combined from human and animals sources, for each adverse state described. This volume integrates information from a very broad literature, in a comprehensive yet readable manner. The author’s underlying thesis is that pro-oxidant and inflammatory events are associated with many unrelated but often all-too-common diseases, and also with aging, exposure to radiation and traumatic brain injury. Emphasis is given to the concept that such complex states demand the use of a range of micronutrients administered in concert, rather than using the “clinical drug model” of administration of single active agents. Examples of micronutrient-based amelioration of many ailments are considered individually in detail. These include It is stressed that the micronutrient approach is to be considered as an effective supplement, rather as substitute for, more orthodox medical means of remediation of these maladies. While the overall hypothesis is very broad, this volume reflects the latest scientific knowledge in this area. This is especially true of genetic mechanisms. Consideration of expression of key gene sequences regulating cellular defense such as the Nuclear Factor Erythroid 2–related Factor 2 (Nrf2) and the Antioxidant Response Element (ARE), are given much prominence. Modulation of gene expression by micro-RNAs is dealt with in detail with respect to a series of disorders.A concluding chapter deals with the author’s view of what he considers to be widely distributed misconceptions concerning micronutrients. The misapprehensions have often led to a dismissive view of micronutrients by health care professionals and they are effectively dealt with here. To achieve the best health outcome, micronutrient considerations need to be fully considered and incorporated into clinical regimens. It is hoped that this remarkable volume dealing rationally with optimization of micronutrient intake in a variety of normal and abnormal physiological states, will help to fill this deficiency.Stephen C. Role of micronutrients in prevention and improved management of chronic diseases
Dr Prasad has written a comprehensive reference on the role of micronutrients in health and disease, with a particular emphasis on chronic neuro-degenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Postraumatic stress disorders (PTSD). The central hypothesis is based on the premise that combining multiple micronutrients is preferable to single high doses of individual anti-oxidants in preventing and mitigating various chronic diseases. He backs up his argument using the latest laboratory data and meta-analysis of multiple clinical data. This book offers clear and valuable guidance on the health benefits of diets and micronutrients, a subject that can be confusing given all the conflicting information that come to us via the headlines of today’s “breaking news.” I highly recommend this book for anyone who’s looking for a clear and fact-based explanation of the relationship between micronutrients and disease.Jae Ho Kim, MD, Ph.D, FACR,Professor of Radiation Oncology and Chairman Emeritus,Henry Ford Health System,Detroit, MI, 48202
