Really nice metal detector
This is without a doubt the best metal detector I have ever owned and I owned my first one in 1971. The three modes (all metal and disc 1 and disc 2) work great and switch with a mere touch of one button with your thumb. YOu never have to use two hands, all the switching you wish to do can be done with one hand. The 5x8 coil is the best for coins and small items, much better than the larger coil that comes with the AT pro. The reason I went with the Gold and not the Pro is the cost of the coil, if you figure in the cost of the added 5x8 coil, the Gold is a better buy! The large coil on the Pro is not as good in reviews as the 5x8 coil so that is the reasoning for going with this Gold and the circuitry is better on the gold also, the only drawback is that it can not be used in salt water...you can use it on the ocean sand beach just not in the salt water.I have already had my Gold wet as I was hunting in the rain. Works great. Very lightweight, very small, love it.I might add that this detector has controls that are easily understood if you watch the DVD that comes with the detector, the controls are easier to understand than my old CZ-5 detector (Fisher). This is the first detector I have owned that has depth display, and the first with "notch discrimination", as it has 3 different modes of operation 1. all metal 2. discrim one and 3. discrim two. The discrim two has the notch discrimination. You can also dial up the iron discrimination from 1 to 40.

Metal Detector for all!
I've had this little guy for about a month now, and have taken it out a few times... I've only been in places in the desert where people have fired their guns into the valleys and draws... I have never been more excited to find spent bullets and casings, and little things like taco bell hot sauce packets. LOL (Laugh Out Loud)...I need to get more experience with this thing, but I not under an illusion of what this thing can or cannot do either! It lives up to its name and more, and I cannot WAIT to find something with it that will blow your socks off with it. The ONLY problem I have with this thing is it does not come with Air Conditioning. LOL... it is a very weather appropriate piece of hardware that most people have never taken under consideration. You can't go out very well in 115° weather and think you are gonna do that all day long. Here in the Sonora Desert where I live, the temps determine when it is or is not appropriate to go out and hunt. That being said-- I am totally ready to go outside with the kids and create memories to last a lifetime!

Works good learning curve to it
First thing found was a quarter so a good start. The second thing found was a pipe in the yard atleast going down 3 feet not sure what it's for, had duck tape on top with a rusted out can over that.Would recommend out out a few things like quarter, penny, and misc metal to see how it reads across the detector.Set ground balance is key where I'm at , which is quick and fast with this machine.I'm looking to go golf prospecting with it this summer so hopefully it pays off...we will see. It's better than other detectors I tried to use.

Horrible performance & annoying chatter
Annoying chatter. Tried everything. From the number of videos and forums that discuss this Garrett issue it appears it’s very common. Could get no help. Should have bought the Minelab Gold Monster.

Buy this machine unless you want to use in ocean.
I did a lot of research on these machines and read a lot of user reviews before I bought mine last month. I have used several metal detectors over the years, but never owned one myself and I would consider myself a novice detector. As such, I wanted a machine with an easy learning curve, but all the bells and whistles of a professional machine. I settled on the AT Gold because I live too far from the ocean to need a salt water machine and I am more likely to take my machine into the California foothills and nugget hunt. It has a small coil on it, but so far I have had no problems finding deep coins at the park. I love that the machine is waterproof up to 10 feet. The stock headphones however are not waterproof, FYI - those cost about $100.Pros:Reasonable cost.Digital screen.Four frequencies.Iron Audio - super helpful in trashy areas!Coils are interchangeable and can be upgraded.Battery life- about 25 hours on 4 AA batteries.Has an optional automatic ground balance, helpful for beginners. Two year manufacturers warranty.Lightweight and collapsible frame.Cons:Cant be used in Saltwater.Coil cover not included.Storage bag not included.Tips:Invest in a good handheld pinpoint detector such as a Garret carrot or Land or Sea, it will speed your recovery time and make your experience much more enjoyable.

The identifier doesn't seem accurate
The identifier claims there is gold silver and brass pretty much everywhere I stand in town or in the woods. A 2in depth and thick piece of gold or silver will be beeping on the identifier bit when I dig that spot there is nothing to be found. Further more when placing something small like a micro sd card on the ground and testing how it reacts the garrette only recognizes it sometimes and thinks everything is the same as the sd card. Probably can be useful in certain settings but just wasn't useful for my application
