Hobby lobby sells 3 pounds for $9, no shipping cost as you pick your own bag from a selection in store. Why $18 plus shipping for 3 pounds of mystery?

Well, that isn't "free shipping," if the price has been jacked up 7-8 bucks to be able to include it is "free shipping." The bags of remnants at Hobby Lobby hit and miss … but still, for less than $20 you get twice as much as what this seller is selling as a 3lbs remnant scrap bag… I'm with you on this one. Hit Hobby Lobby first! lol

are these vegetable tan leather?

The leather comes from a variety of sources so some of it would and some would not.

What kind of skin are these?

It is usually a mixed bag...cow, lamb or pig skin

I’m trying to find the right leather for projects like wallets, journal cases etc. would this be a good type of leather to do those projects with?

It would be perfect for something like that. These pieces are beautiful. The only thing is that some pieces will be softer or thinner than others so you might need to bond two pieces together to get a little more body if that's what you were looking for. If you need it, there's plenty of tutorials on YouTube that can walk you through how to do something like that. Good luck on your projects!
