Q: the description indicates .040, 7/16 thick. So which is it? Also is the shipping container adequate for a precision instrument and if so, how so. Thx.

Don't know where they are getting their decimal conversions... but 7/16 wide is accurate for the "straight edge" part of the tool. You can see from the picture that it is sort of a figure 8. I don't remember exactly how it was packaged, but it was a box within a box, within a box. I arrived with no damage what-so-ever. It's a hefty piece of aluminum for the price.

Q: How to these handle being constantly hit with a razor blade while I cut lines on cardboard and paper?

I have used mine as a guide for a utility knife blade without doing any damage to the straight edge. I can't picture why you would be constantly hitting the straight edge with your razor blade but if you're doing this, the straight edge will accumulate small nicks because the aluminum is so much softer than any steel blade.

Q: Anyone used this to check flatness on a cylinder block & head?

I can't answer this directly but its spec is to be within 0.003" of dead flat over its length. Even with the straightedge, you still have to judge the flatness of the surface to some extent by eye or with the help of feeler gauges or a light behind it or something so there's probably a little error in that. I haven't used it on a cylinder block or head but I would guess it would work if you're careful and being within 0.003" is good enough.

Q: Can anyone tell me how heavy this is? I'm looking for something to use when installing flooring. Need it to run a knife along while cutting it.

It weighs 1.77 lbs. It seems like overkill to use for a straight edge to cut flooring. I would think a good quality aluminum ruler would do the job.
