Specs are wrong!
Just bought this player and it might be fine but it doesn't have the TOS link that is mentioned in the specifications so we need to send it back :(

Great DVD player for Netflix discs
I wanted to purchase an inexpensive DVD player for two main reasons: a player that would play Netflix discs without freezing, and a player that would last a couple of years until the Blue-Ray players came down in price.Since I only bought this player last month, I can't judge how long it will last. However, it has been outstanding at playing the 11 Netflix discs that I've watched so far. And some of those discs were heavily scratched. I'm assuming the progressive scan is what did the trick. One disc did give it a little trouble (the player paused a second or so), but then handled it without losing any of the scene. The player has two more features that I like:- You can turn it off while watching a movie, and then pick it back up at that same point the next time you turn it on. It will actually remember your position for up to six DVD's! My last Sony player had the "remember" feature, but would only remember one DVD.- The player, on your screen, can divide a DVD into sections and show you the beginning scene for each section. This is really handy for those movies that don't have a scenes index. It was also easy to setup and has a very low profile, so it doesn't take up much room.

Insufficient output options
I purchased this unit because it was a Sony, and a replacment for an older unit that died. When it arrived it did not have S-video output, or optical audio output for Dolby 5.1.I was able to swap it for another unit in the house but now my big screen equipment does not match, and the RCA unit is not fully controllable by the Sony Remote Commander. No big deal, but it would have been nice to have a description of the output options in the product description. The more expensive models had some "new" type of output that my 60' TV does not support.

I love this DVD player!
I have a small hdtv in my room upstairs. Normally, I watch DVDs on my laptop since I only watch during the weekends. However, I get tired of loading up the computer just to watch a movie. So I decided to get a cheap dvd player that can play at 480P. I got this model. There are several good things and bad things about this player. Most of the complaint though, will probably not apply to everyone:* The player is outstanding. It plays my scratched dvd fairly well.* It comes with cables only for the sdtv, not hdtv. I had to spend an extra 20 bucks to get the cables for an hdtv. I am not very happy about that.* No Closed Caption on hdtv. I'm not exactly sure if Closed Captioning is disabled for all HDTV or if this is the fault of my TV not allowing closed captioning on HDTV or if it's the fault of this dvd player. So I won't hold it against the player but instead warn users who wish to get a player for their hdtv. I know I can enable caption when I use the SDTV line, but when I got the HDTV line, I could no longer view close caption and have to rely on subtitles which may or may not be presented on dvds. It's a minor inconvenience, but I guess I just have to turn up the tv and hope people in the house don't get annoyed.Overall, good dvd player. I will enjoy a lot of great movies upstairs in my room while others in my house hold don't have to worry about me taking up the main tv. Very good, cheap, and easy to use.

What a peice.
Save up your money for a better player. This machine wouldn't play a disc with a hairline scratch on it. I was getting fed up with this machine BEFORE it broke. Then it broke.I hit the eject button to open the tray, I heard a click, then what sounded like the motor slowing down, then a loud POP.The track broke off of the tray because the teeth on the gear and the track were misaligned. I called Sony to see if I could just buy a new optical drive, and I could, but it would cost $90.. I was like "The drive costs more than the player?" and they were like "yes"Needless to say I have a new DVD Player now. And its much nicer.Save up for something above $60.. you won't regret it.

Good DVD player - worst user manual I have ever seen
I would give this unit 5 stars if the instruction manual (owner's manual) wasn't so AWFUL. It is the worst, most amateurish manual I have ever seen. If I were Sony, I would be embarrassed. A 10 year old child could do better. One example - the pictures/drawings in the manual that show what you should see onscreen when going through setup bear no resemblance to what you actually see.Since the manual was OF NO HELP, it took a lot of trial and error to learn how to control this unit. Now that I know how, the unit runs quite well. It is just a bit slow to respond to commands when it is first turned on...but responds crisply to commands when playing a dvd (such as forward or back, play slow motion, play fast motion, zoom in and out, pause, etc.).As mentioned by others, this player only plays region 1 dvd's but it does a very nice job with discs of varying quality.General Information - I am using this unit with a 1999 Toshiba 27 inch TV, model CZ27V51 with ColorStream (same as component video) capability and a 4:3 ratio screen.Notice to Sony ==> pay me 1/2 of what you paid your team of writers and I will write a manual customers will love (because it will be accurate, clear and easy to read) and that Sony will be proud of (because it will be professional).

Great value for the price
The Sony DVD player works fine out of the box. I have had a few low end DVD players and they all start out OK but stop working fairly quickly. The Sony has been going for a while now with now problems. It is simple and elegant, stands up to kids and plays clear DVDs. What more c ould you ask?
