I choose Fred!
Both of my daughters are so close in age I decided to use one curriculum for both of them and adjust it to fit their needs. We have a set of Base Ten blocks that lets them manipulate and visualize math, but it still wasn't "fun". Along came Fred and math has taken a turn for the better. Fred is fun, engaging, and kids can't help but be enthralled by him. The books read like a story and many different types of subjects are touched upon, not just math. My girls will ask so many questions about things in each chapter that I feel like the learning could go on forever. They can't wait to get their hands on the book every day to figure out what Fred will get up to next. Fred even introduces them to the concepts of geometry, algebra, and calculus very early on so I feel it won't be a total shock once they actually get there. We are so thankful we found Fred in grade school because we are going to use him as long as we can!

Fabulous
My children ask to do math. I liked math but I don't think I ever asked to do it. Despite only working on math for short intervals without much repetition, they seem to be picking up on math concepts at an astonishing pace and depth. I do supplement with outside help for memorizing addition facts (Life of Fred does request them to memorize the facts but I find they need repetition to really get the job done.), Family Math and Math Challenge but Fred is the best. My oldest loves reading and Life of Fred makes math like a great reading puzzle. Fabulous.

I love these books
I love these books. Some things are just worth the time and money because they are beautiful and rich. I do not use this as the only math resource in my homeschool, but I would highly recommend them. They are funny, engaging, and have other subjects woven in a natural way.

Engaging math series
The Life of Fred books have really gotten my 10-yr-old math hater to BEG to do math! The first few books in the series are very easy, but read quickly. I recommend starting with Apples only because you get to know Fred and get his backstory. Picking up here is harder only from that standpoint. I LOVE that these books also throw in references to history, geography, astronomy, as well as other subjects in with the math concepts. Your kids will not be asking WHY they need to learn math either as all of the concepts make sense in a real-world way. Highly recommend this entire series. ***this is a supplement to our main homeschooling curriculum.

Kids like it. Some rather high-level concepts are introduced in an approachable way.
My son loves these books. They are kinda weird at points, but we haven't finished the series yet, so it all may make sense by the end. One thing that drives me nuts is that the books need to be read in order but the volume numbers aren't printed anywhere on the cover. I have to keep going back to my order info to figure out which book to read next. And after a little break from reading them, I had the worst time trying to figure out where we left off. I think volume numbers would have helped me remember where we were. Other than that annoyance, it's a good series. Not impressive artwork, but if it keeps my kids' attention and they are learning something, then I don't care about the artwork quality.
