A Training Tool
The Shavette offers a low-cost means of experimenting with straight razor shaving without making a large investment in a proper blade. It allows you to practice shaving without first having to learn to hone and strop a blade, and if you are coming to straight razor shaving from safety razor shaving, you may still use whatever stockpile of DE razor blades you have built for yourself. As regards the razor itself:It is light - the low weight makes it such that the force of any pass must be supplied in large part by your own hand. If you began as sloppy as I, you will nick yourself a few times - nothing fierce, but you'll bleed again and look like a kid who just started again. In general, I think this may make it easier to get stuck on hairs and increase risk of cutting as you try to unstick yourself.Degrees of Freedom - The angle of the blade is in your control to a degree greater than with safety razors. You can give yourself a better shave, but it depends more on your own ability, such that you may also give yourself a terrible shave and decorate your face with tiny red slashes.Easy to Clean - If you're dealing with large volumes of hair, a straight razor is the least likely to get clogged with hair of any razor; here, small hairs may get caught between the blade and its plastic holder, but it's nothing like the hair that quickly clogs up a cartridge razor. In Conclusion: This is a good step between safety razor and proper straight razor. It's cheap; it works; you can use the same blades you've been using with a safety razor.

Best idea I've seen in years!
I shave with either a strait razor or an old style double edged razor. I prefer a strait razor for the quality of shave but I don't like keeping them sharp. Enter the solution in the form of the Dovo Shavette. It uses the same blades as the double edged razor by simply breaking them in two pieces. So now my daily shave is the quality of a strait razor and I can used the inexpensive double edge blades. No more sharpening the razor I just toss out the dull blade and replace it with a new one. This may have been around for years but if it was I missed it. It's the perfect answer to getting the great shave of a strait with the convenience of disposable low cost blades. If you haven't tried the wonderful shave you get with a mug and brush and strait razor then you've been punishing yourself. Shaving shouldn't be a chore but a nice way to start your day. Thanks Dovo for making that convenient and cost effective with the Shavette!

Not what is listed!
The item I received is the black plastic handle with the aluminum razor, not stainless steel. The aluminum is much lighter in weight, which forces your to apply more pressure during shaving, leading to more cuts. The aluminum also doesn't seem to hold up nearly as well as the SS model does. Lastly, the description states that this comes with the red blade holder. I ordered 200 blades to fit that holder to find the green holder came with my razor. The green blade holder fits the largest blades possible for this thing; not a standard DE blade. This item is getting shipped back to Amazon immediately.

Great option for a first straight razor!
Good razor if you don't want the hassle of honing and stropping not to mention the high start up price of a traditional straight razor. It comes with two black insert that fit the Dovo Shavette blades (which are nice but are expensive). One black one is for shaving and the other is a hair shaper. It also comes with a red insert that uses standard DE blades broken in half (most cost effective and comfortable for me with Derby or Feather DE blades). There is also a green insert that is not included that uses Personna blades (these blades are too harsh for me personally). It is very well made and very light weight. The lightness can be a problem because I seem to want to shave faster which causes me more irritation. So a word of advice is go slow and enjoy the shave.

compared to my $8 dollar shavette this thing feels like a fisher price toy BUT wow does it work ...
I will say, compared to my $8 dollar shavette this thing feels like a fisher price toy BUT wow does it work well. The lightness of the assembly is a little awkward at first but contrary to what I believed it helps you have a lot more control. The light weight lets the razor respond to your face in ways you simply can't feel with a heavy parker style shavette. The design of the plastic holder also seems to act like an amplifier and makes the sounds of shaving much louder. This feedback really helps with telling how your shave is going.I got the smoothness I would get from a 4 pass shave with my parker style shavette in 2 passes with this shavette.Other random notesMy shavette came with everything pictured a clear insert(formally red) the black insert with the guard, the black insert with no guard, a merkur DE blade and one extended DE Blade. If the blade holder is loose as mine was on arrival just take the blade holder out and pinch the metal part a little bit. There are two divots on the blade holders that you can put your finger nails on to remove the blade holder without cutting yourself.DOVO BRING BACK THE RED INSERTS! They just look cooler.

A fine shave for a cheap price.
I claim no expertise in the world of straight razor shaving, indeed far from it. However, in reading a lot of the reviews on here, it sounded like the people who were giving the bad reviews were the people used to the older straight razors, which are heavier and use a strop and all of that. This is my first straight razor, I figured for the reasonable price I could give it a try. And sure enough, gives a right handsome shave. If you're just the type who wants to take up straight razor shaving for whatever reasons, and doesn't want to spend a couple hundred bucks on the kit, this thing is amazing. I've only cut myself here and there, but nothing to speak of really, only minor scratches. As for the handling, works fine for me, it just takes some getting used to. Certainly shaves better than any safety razor I've encountered. I definitely recommend this razor.
