The Secret Staircase (Brambly Hedge)

This beautiful little book rounds out our collection of Brambly Hedge books. This is a stand out with the heightened sense of adventure and mystery with the discovery of the secret staircase that leads Wilfred and Primrose into the chambers of the Woodmouce ancestors. The underlying theme in this story is Midwinter which I think is a great alternative to Christmas and opens questions for kids about this holiday which is an ancient celebration. I love the detailed maps and drawings that accompany the story and the little descriptions which fill in the corners of your mind while reading.I read this and other Brambly Hedge books to my kids who are 6 and 4 and they adore them, sitting quietly, listening intently through the book. My 6 year old reads this book as well with some help from me. Vocabulary is hard in this story but the fact that it introduces new words not ordinarily seen in modern books is a bonus.This is a wonderful book I highly recommend for parents to share with their kids.

"The Secret Staircase" by Jill Barklem, is one wee book out of a series entitled, the Brambly Hedge. It is a very sweet story within a petite hard bound book. From England, Jill Barklem was an incredible illustrator and author of many children's books. Her many detailed illustrations of the mice and their neighbors living in the Brambly Hedge, are a pleasure to view and read about. The author created an entire imaginative world within the hedge groves and trees of Brambly Hedge. I highly recommend the entire Brambly Hedge series for all ages.

sweet story about kids finding secret rooms and doing theatre. I wish the story was a little more rich and the images were larger, but really gorgeous pictures and quality. It's still a must have!

Books are in good condition as described. Shipped without problem. Cute little book for children with great illustrations. I have made the characters for my granddaughter and she loves all of it--the story, the characters, etc.

The stories are simple and sweet and the illustrations are wonderful. One can spend hours looking at the detailed cut-aways of the underground homes with their kitchens, bedrooms, storage rooms, etc.Young children will love hearing the stories and exploring the illustrations.

Book was in excellent shape--clean, no tears, stains, or folds, and came within expected time. Missing flyleaf which some people might care about--I personally do not need it.

Jill Barklem writes great stories and the illustrations are exquisite. I read many of her stories to my son 20 years ago and just had to have my own copy.
