AFTER 40 YEARS I FOUND SOMETHING USEFULL FOR MY OLD FLASH UNITS
I received this 2 days ago and put it to work with my new camera. I have over 40 years as a photographer and have most of the flash units I have bought over the years. Some are very expensive units and have set in the drawer protected from heat and light. All are like new and work extremely well. Finally they are usable again. I took 6 units of all types out of the drawer and loaded them up with battery's. One by one I placed them on my new and very expensive Christmas camera. One by one, they all worked as they had the first day I got them. My studio equipment and cords work like I had just bought them. Some of these flash units were purchased when I was in college taking all the photos with my Minolta camera. One that surprised me was 51 years old and worked like new. Its nostalgia at its best, using some of these units. Most of them work better than the one I purchased 4 months ago. It just does it in a different manner. Lots of bounce flash photos that looked perfect. This is worth twice the money I paid and more. Especially when you consider the Sony unit to do this is hundreds of dollars. Simply amazing unit !!!

Works well enough for my purposes
Works with my Godox wireless trigger and hard wired via the PC port to my 19 year old Alien Bees monolight. However I would not count on it working with older on camera flashes. It doesn't work with my relatively recent Sunpak 383. (Thought, oddly, it did fire when pressing the test button on the adapter) Didn't, and then eventually did fire a Vivitar 550FD from the '80s. One thing sorely lacking -- any kind of instruction manual.

Technically works, but still needs improvement
I suppose it worked ok, but was difficult to get on and off camera. Felt like I was going to break something every time. Also make the flash extra tall and doesn't feel sturdy. I felt like the whole flash was going to fall off the camera. I ended up returning the flash that I had and this adapter and getting an external flash that fit directly to my camera.

Perfect for the Sony A65.
Got this for my camera because Sony, in their infinite wisdom, use a different shoe adapter. This does work and fits nicely. I hooked up a Yongnuo flash and worked perfectly. I also use it to attach my Rode microphone when I need good audio. I have to admit, I had a hard time removing it because there is a small pin in the front that acts like a lock. The lock on the front is hard to release sometimes but overall a nice piece of equipment.

Doesn't work
Couldn't get it to work at all.

This baby does what is was designed to do very well!!
I'm an "Old School" photographer, so I have a number of old school camera flashes. This adapter lets me use my still functioning flashes with my Sony digital cameras. The flashes sync every time; no misfires! I love how the adapter fits my camera's Minolta style hot shoe so solidly and the battery check led; no more guessing if the battery died! Money well spent!

Good choice for some, but not all sync needs
I purchased the SMDV safesync adapter because I needed a way to sync non-Sony/Minolta strobes with my new A57, so what I have to say in this review only indirectly affects the SMDV product. The thing to know (if you haven't already figured it out) is that the cheaper 50-series and lower Sony Alphas are intentionally not designed like SLRs, and are closer to point and shoot consumer cameras or "bridge" cameras for budding enthusiasts. For example, aside from the Alpha 50-series and lower not having a dedicated x-sync jack, the proprietary hotshoe does NOT activate if the Live View Setting Effect is set to ON. Also, if you have invested in Wireless flash triggers (I have a set of Yongnuo RF-603N triggers for Nikons), they won't trigger unless you connect them PC-to-PC jack and then, still not sure...And forget popping the built-in flash for optical triggers, as they ALWAYS pre-flash setting your optical triggers off ahead of the shutter, and the image remains unlit, and it does not matter what sync speed you set.The adapter comes with a special circuit that requires a small lithium battery to protect them for older units. My 25 year-old Speedotron strobes and I did not want to take the risk that they would damage the A57 unit. More than likely, with the amount of automation that has to be circumvented to use the A57 with PC-cable triggered strobes, you're better off with a dedicated wireless system than this wired one for studio work or investing in a A77 or better, that has a normal PC jack or ISO hotshoe built in. The adapter also have a foot lock pin that is somewhat hard to get at underneath the somewhat long overhang, but manageable if you don't remove it much.I give this adapter 4 stars for doing it's job when the camera allows it to, but it's job can be done better and more efficiently with a wireless trigger system instead.
