They replace the ones that no longer worked as there two ways to tell if smell come through or it hard to breath through it a clear sign to replace and that all depends on the time and environment you been in with it

Even though these may cost a little more than generic filters, they are worth it - how much are your lungs worth?These filters are very easy to breath through. They have a large surface area and should last a long time.All 3M equipment is NIOSH approved so you know you are getting the best you can buy. Enough said.
