Indispensable for outside cats
We've used K&H heated pads and bowls for over a decade. The setup our cats prefer involves insulated cubes with the smallest entrance hole possible. Ideally, they want two: one small so it traps heat (with a K&H heated pad under them and, if possible, one or two more that are wall-mounted) and another fairly big cube (so it holds 1/4-1/2 bale of straw they can burrow into). When it's not COLD cold or during power outages, they use the second one. If it's cold and the power is out, along with the straw, we add Snuggle Safes, instant hand warmers (especially the 24 hour ones), or in a pinch, old socks filled with whole grain - usually rice - heated in the microwave. The last two options have the advantage of not turning into ice blocks. If electricity is available, the heated pads are FAR less work. It's worth investing in an extension cord and SockIt box or whatever if necessary. That said, if the weather is milder, our cats would prefer something all the way around them that can hold their own body heat instead of the warm belly/cold back campfire effect. With the pad, lots of straw would end up under the cat and come between her and the warmth, defeating the purpose. So the pad must basically be used alone. We've learned:- Hard pads seem to get warmer than soft ones- Some pads/bowls get warmer than others- They all last at least several years, some will reach double digits- Eventually they stop getting as warm- Their life expectancy seems inconsistent- We used them without covers because we get snow, but if you use them, it's good to have extras. For the hard pads, one layer of thin cotton flannel seems fine.- On the soft pads, ditto with a slightly thicker layer- Anything more defeats the purpose and probably reduces longevity- DIY covers are easy to make, but need to be held in place somehow (I've stitched shock cord to run underneath, but I've also used pillowcases)- The waterproof casing on the soft ones may stain if not cleaned regularly- If more cord protection is needed (some pets are chewers; also, the protective stainless steel coil, if present, may eventually rust) I've scrounged hoses made for a carpet steamer, but ones from a pool cleaner, bilge pump, or water garden should also work

Nice little skillet for young chicks
I love this thing . I like many people was concerned with the heat lamp possibly burning down my house so I bought this to use instead. It is a hard plastic shell with a cord. I put it in with my 8 day old chicks. It got warm quickly. At night I put a light pointed at it since they seem to equate heat with light.

Easy to clean
Works great for my ducklings. I got two since I have some chicks coming soon. But this is definitely going to work out a lot easier than a heating pad that I have to keep turning back on every three hours. I also love the fact it's hard plastic so it's super easy to spray and wipe clean. Definitely will purchase another if I need it!

Just right…
We have two cats that showed up one day, not at the same time, and the wife an I have been taking care of since. I made two covered beds for outside use and put the heating pads inside. They are not too hot and the cats like them a lot in the winter and cold months. We will continue to buy this product if these finally stop working. Just a heads up.. we have had one of these heat pads for over 5 years.

Great for pocket pets
I purchased this item for my hairless rat. It was the perfect item as it provided heat when he sat on it and never became too hot or hurt his delicate skin. I highly recommend this item for small animals! Luckily the item was durable and the metal cord was not chewed on, and it was a safe addition to my rat cage for multiple years

Very good heat source for newborn rabbits.
Was very grateful for this little heat mat this past week. One of my rabbits had a litter just days before a hard freeze. The barn does not have heat, but we don't get many freezes during the year. I buried the heating pad under some straw in the nesting box and drilled a hole at the back to run the cord. The cord is very sturdy and so far, chew proof. This kept the kits alive and hopping. Very easy and inexpensive fix. Otherwise I would have to bring the cages into the garage and set up a heater, which gets pretty messy after a few days. The heat seems to be consistent and the kits love it.
