Q: Where is this square made

Dont know but i personally think a framing square with stair guages works better, its kind of cheap quality

Q: I am not a pro, I just want to do some wood working around the house here and there. Will this tool benefit me more than the 7inch version?

I work as a carpenter and i have both the 7inch and a 12inch version.I carry The 7inch speed square with me all the time and use it a lot, the 12inch sqaure i keep in the toolbox because it's size makes it unpractical to carry with me and to be honest I rarly take it out and use it, maybe once or twice a month.So as for using at home I would go for the 7inch.If you occasionally need to make a longer marking then 7inch you can lay a straight board along the 90 degree side, then remove the square and make your marking. Q: I just bought the 12" speed square, The slot that is supposed to hold the rise portion is way to large for the supplied 1/4" bolt? anyone else?

I just bought the same exact item from two different big box retailers. I bought and returned the first purchase because I assumed that the manufacturer had issued a recall on the item and the retailer had neglected to pull the existing stock from shelves. Because I was beginning a critical new stair job and I had chipped the pivot point on the 15 year old 12" speed square that I already owned, I bought another one from the second retailer. The product was defective from both retailers....and this is 10 months after your Sept. 2014 post.....apparently the problem has not been corrected by the manufacturer.

I would suggest the 7" speed square. If you are going to be cutting a lot of 2x12's then the 12" would be handy in addition to the 7''. The 12" square comes with a layout bar for cutting stairs.
