Work great on deep, wide steps (with several of the 20" extension cords)
The media could not be loaded. Note on video (since there's no sound):On New Year's morning I looked out, saw heavy snow falling, and remembered I hadn't turned on the HeatTrak mats I had installed a few days earlier on my front steps. They were already mostly covered with snow—particularly the one on the left that isn't under the porch roof—and the snow was still falling. I turned on the mats, and within ten minutes the snow was gone, as you can see in the video (speeded up for your convenience, but you can follow the time in the upper right corner). It was 23°F outside at the time. I didn't sweep, shovel, set foot outside, or even open the door, and there was no sun to help melt the snow; the mats get all the credit.Written review:The two slate steps leading from my sidewalk to my front porch are nine feet wide, two feet deep (front to back) and only five inches tall (so short they look like they're on the same level from the overhead camera, but they're not). The HeatTrak HR10-30 Residential Snow-Melting Stair Mats (for some reason "Insert a product link" can't find it, although it's right here on Amazon, ASIN B00421AHY2), at only 10 by 30 inches, would look like a joke, like tiny toe pads hidden in the snow. I can imagine their just forming little rectangular lakes of melted snow surround on all sides by walls of unmelted snow, and they might well be more dangerous than nothing at all.Although I put the stair mats in my shopping cart, I'm very glad I replaced them with these walkway mats before I placed the order. Although these are more expensive and require several extra HeatTrak extension cords to connect them, they work perfectly, as the video shows. The mat covers an ample five-foot width and all but the back few inches of the step, which is partly overhung by the step above and rarely actually stepped on anyway. The total cost came to a little over $300, but it's worth it to me never again to have to clear snow off the front steps.Details:I used the following:* two of these walkway mats,* one of the HeatTrak HR-P Power Units (ASIN B00421AHXI, also not showing up in "Insert a product link"),* three of the HeatTrak HR-EXT20 Watertight Cable Extenders, 20-Inch (ASIN B004BX8XNI) (I realized later I really needed only one),* one Woods 32555 Outdoor Remote Control Outlet Converter Kit (a link at last!), which is what let me turn on the mats on New Year's morning without stepping out in the snow, and which cost a fraction of the HeatTrak HR-Wireless Remote Control Outlet and Switch for Snow Melting Mats (ASIN B008HCS01Y) and gets better reviews, and* four strips of Velcro Extreme Indoor/Outdoor Rough Surface Fasteners, 1 inch x 4 inches, 10 per pack (90812), since I wasn't about to drill holes in my steps to fasten down the mats; I put one Velcro strip under each end of each mat.I had to use the three extension cords because the connectors on these mats are laid out for end-to-end connection, and to connect them side-to-side on steps required running the cord between the two mats all the way across both mats and up the step. I probably could have done it with only two extensions, but the extra length let me run it out of the way. (I actually could have done it with only one extension if I had laid the mats down differently. Using these mats on steps really is a trial-and error undertaking. Maybe someday HeatTrak will sell a version with the connectors oriented for steps. Deep (front too back) outdoor steps really aren't that unusual.)The Velcro is working great so far, although the mats are big and heavy enough, and the bottom (and top) are rough and rubbery enough that they don't move much on the fairly rough stone anyway. By the way, the mats are great also when just wet (which they normally are since they melt whatever snow falls on them)—they're not slippery at all when wet.Installing the mats was easy; although they're stiff, rolled up pretty tight for shipping, and heavy, they flattened out quickly when warm, and the weather-tight connections really are secure but easy to plug and unplug. The lighted plug at the far end of the last mat (it comes with the power unit) gives a nice visual confirmation when the power is on.I'm delighted with this product.

Very Effective for Safety
I bought these snow melt mats after a family member slipped on black ice and suffered a broken arm. They are easy to connect to each other and very effective at keeping snow & ice from forming. They have a textured surface, which provides additional shoe grip even when they're wet, as they will be when the snow & ice has melted. If there's a heavy snowfall before they are powered up, then the bulk of the snow will have to be removed. It only takes about 30 minutes or less to melt an inch of snow/ice. Once powered up, they will keep the walkway ice-free and safe to walk on. Just wish I'd bought them sooner than I did. They're a bit pricey, to be sure, but they can provide safe footing on an otherwise dangerous, icy surface. Highly recommended.

Love these mats
I think we are on our third year with these electric mats. I am in my mid 80's and we get a lot of snow in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and they save me a lot of work, and the safety factor alone is reason to buy them.

they work, but a bit of buyers remorse for the expense
thought that 1 of 3 of these 20" x 60" mats i just set up was not heating, but if you look at images, snow all around the yard but on the 2 mats coming from under the gate. . only an inch of snow but worth it thus far. in deeper snow we will see for certain. *BTW, Heat Trak custy service has been responsive answering amp-age and return questions.the mat which is not warming as well as the others is the furthest from the outlet, but as was Rx, i am using Heat Trak's 25' extension cord and 6' power unit plugged directly into an outlet dedicated to these mats and nothing else. so the extension to the power unit helped, but i also needed the extender from stairs to entryway. annoyed by the cost, as the title shows, but these are not cheap cords, they are really thick and brute. i don't know how they could fail being this sturdy. even under foot traffic.I invested $800 in these b/c I broke my pelvis in 4 places and - as of Jan.17 - i have 6 more weeks of healing before the broken bones are fused properly. I have fallen every winter on my icy stairs, so investment in those mats were a must. then I just got carried away realizing I won't be able to shovel b/c I also have broken wrist and arm/elbow. so i ordered 3 of the 20 x 60 for the walkway - which borders a feral cat feeder (so they will love these). i got the 10x48 inch stair treads abd could have save $120 and gotten away with 38". last member of the melting crew is a 20 x 30" doorstep mat. so far, all the other mats are heating as expected.a note about amps -ampage cannot exceed 13 for the single power unit. when planning your purchase, figure the distance of mats to outlet and then add the wattage. after 13 anps, you need another power cord unit. but i believe both can be on a single dedicated exterior power source/outlet. byt Heat Trak may be able to anwer that. i do know if you get the wifi power cord, there is room for 2 regular power cords plug into it, meaning you could run 26 amps worth of matting through a dedicated exterior circuit.after this winter, i will bring these to my 76 yo mom who lives in da burgh where it is noth colder with much more frequent snow accumulation. but for winter 2020, as confusing as these were to figure out (this is a me thing, not a Heat Trak thing), it will all be worth it to not fall going out the door to my home, giving my bones a better chance to heal without complication.

Feral cat loves this
Works brilliantly for the feral cat that I feed - she loves to sleep on it. Has worked perfectly all winter. Seems extremely durable and very easy to plug in. Melts all snow pretty quickly. I used it with an outside timer so it wasn't on 24 X 7 - and it has been very reliable.
