best headlamp I've ever owned
excellent amount of light. It's my favorite headlamp. Use it at home, camping, walking our dog in the evening, and for any projects around the house that need light. I also find this headlamp very useful when I click my dog's nail (can see the qwik). the headlamp portion is the widest I've ever seen so the distribution of light is very, very nice outside. It's not just a narrow bean of light, it does a great job at lightening up the backyard when I take the dog out at night to go to the bathroom. This is a much better headlamp in terms of safety because you can see everything. It also has the nice ability to tilt the light downward - the headlamp and its casing is connected to a black panel which has the feature of tilting the headlamp at any angle, so when I want the light to hit the ground (i.e. when I am walking or doing my dog's nails), I can do that - the light beam doesn't hit my dog's eyes. It's also lighter weight than my prior headlamps - I bring it hiking when I am doing a short overnight section hike. (For longer multiday hikes, I use the ultra lightweight Coast headlamp). I really love this headlamp. I've owned many and this one is the best one on the market. Coast brand is very reputable.

Perfect for Lace Knitting and Detailed Crafting!
Love this - I never ever write reviews but this product is so great for lace knitting I had to share. It has many options for varying levels of brightness and is easily adjustable to fit comfortably. Unlike the neck lights, of which I have one, it follows your head movements so it is exactly pointed on the area of focus and doesn't need repositioning (although you can tilt it if needed.) It only took about an hour to fully charge out of the box and I love that the charger is USB-C, as another reviewer noted. I hate mini USB chargers and am on a mission to eliminate the need from them from my life wherever possible. If you are a lace knitter or like to do other highly detailed crafts, sewing, or embroidery, don't hesitate to buy this.

Coast makes the best headlamps, but this is not quite perfect
Through the years of LED headlamps, I have owned many different products by Petzl, Black Diamond, Duracell, and now Coast. Without question, the Coast are easily the best I have used in terms of build quality, lifespan, efficiency, and function. The Petzl and BD are quite expensive at the fancy pants outdoor gear stores, and I have found that they only last a bit past a year, which is of course just slightly past the warranty periods. The Coast units I have are a few years old and just as good today as when I bought them, with no flakiness in the switches/electronics or the closures, and the elastic in the headbands lasts much longer than the other brands. There are a couple of dings I have for the FL85 models: As another user noted, the red LED is a bit narrow for close-in use, like reading a book or map, and cooking; but it works better for seeing things more than a couple of feet away -- a tough balance that might be met by having one colored LED shoot longer and the other to shoot shorter. They are pretty bulky and heavy for a single strap unit, so they tend to slide down, especially during any kind of active periods, unless the strap is cranked down to the point of discomfort. I would be okay with an add-on strap is available. Also, I often use headlamps when riding my bike at night because I can track vehicles and pedestrians with my head, which really helps with my visibility, so I would prefer to have a strobe option for that use. If these 2 things were fixed AND

Bright
So many nice features. Sounds silly but my favorite is USB C port for charging instead of micro USB. Very comfortable to wear and 2 levels of brightness. Both quite bright. Also the beam can be focused to a bright center spot. Really nice light. Good value. I definitely want another one.

Very good, but not perfect
The Coast FL85R is a great general purpose headlamp. I purchased it to keep in my toolbag at home, so it gets used mostly when making repairs around the house or in an automotive setting. The variable focus lens is quite nice, and can be adjusted from a wide flood light to a narrow spotlight. Love it.It is very bright, and I like that it has the ability to use a rechargeable lithium battery (included) or regular AAA batteries. The on/off buttons are simple and fairly easy to operate.I wouldn't call it a lightweight headlamp, but it's not particularly heavy, either. It's physically a little bulky, but not super heavy for its size. I'd pick something smaller if you are looking for a headlamp to use while backpacking, but for anything else the size is completely fine.I really like this headlamp and am glad I purchased it. However, there are a few things about it that keep me from giving it a 5-star rating:- It uses micro USB for charging rather than the more current and common USB-C.- It does not have a memory for remembering the brightness level you last used, so each time you turn it off and then on again, you have to click through the various settings to get what you want.- The headband has a buckle that can be opened & closed. Not problematic, but unnecessary and just adds bulk.- The red & green LEDs are too focused (narrow beam) to be practically useful. I sometimes like to use a red light for reading, and the red light on this headlamp is so narrow that it's not good for viewing anything at an arm's reach. So, basically useless.I still recommend this headlamp despite. I've owned multiple products made by Coast and they've all been great.

Best headlamp brand!
I love coast headlamps. I’ve owned quite a few and they are the best, brightest headlamps for the money. I love that this one has the option to use a reusable battery pack or AAA batteries. It has saved me a lot of money in batteries already as I typically go through quite a lot, but I also want the option to use batteries in case I forget to charge it, or don’t have the means to charge it on a hunting or fishing trip. Overall it’s the best headlamp I’ve ever owned
