Can this device work away from home

Yes you can, if you want to play online games away from home you will still need WiFi (I use my phone as a WiFi hotspot)

Do i need an Xbox to play one of these or is it like the switch and you can just puck up and download games?

It’s more like a laptop but obviously fantastic for on the go gaming. You would download games from Steam or whichever platform you choose but with some games it may require a bit more tinkering.
