A much needed upgrade
Soulstorm, as you may or may not know, is the supposedly updated and improved version of the PS1 hit Abe's Exoddus. This was the second game featuring the heroic knucklehead Abe the Mudokin. In the first game, Abe's Oddyssey, Abe discovered that he and his pals were about to become the next great taste sensation from Rupture Farms. This game was recently updated under the title "New & Tasty" for PS4 (See review). In Abe's Exoddus, Abe is tasked with stopping his old enemies, the Glukkons, from making a beverage called "Brew" from the bones of Mudokin ancestors. Soulstorm would seem to follow suit. The original idea was to have three characters - Abe, Munch and The Mysterious Stranger - and design five games around each. Sadly, what began as a wonderful idea died after the second game. The company, Oddworld Inhabitants, was bought by a larger company and, though Munch and The Mysterious Stranger got games, they were not really what was intended. Yet they were good, just not really Oddworld as originally envisioned by the developers. At this point all I can say about Soulstorm is that the graphics are definitely an improvement. I have yet to finish level one (I just played a bit to look at it when I first got it) but already I find that many of the game's new mechanics are difficult to manage. In particular the aiming of thrown objects leaves a lot to be desired. Specifically, I found it difficult to put out fires with water-bombs, even when the splash seemed to indicate the water had hit the fire. I also found the opening cinematics to be not quite up to snuff. This may have been due to the fact that the game was originally supposed to be a PS5 exclusive. Even if it were possible to find one, I would not buy a PS5, but that's another story. The point is that the quirks and bugs of this game seem to indicate that it was hurriedly retrograded to work with PS4. I intend to update this review once I play more of the game. For now, it gets 4 stars.
