Q: Can I control volume with fire stick remote?

In order to get your Firestick remote to control the soundbar volume, you must connect the soundbar to the TV via HDMI-ARC cable (an HDMI version that supports an audio return channel). Once connected, set the TV to use the sound bar as the sound source. Mine automatically setup when I connected the cable. At this point, you use the Yamaha remote to set the options (like surround) that you want. Then you don't need the Yamaha remote any more. At this point, it should automatically be controlled by your TV remote OR your Firestick remote.

Q: my previous yamaha sound bar kept switching back to tv speakers, does this one do the same?

No it will not. If you plug the sound bar into the ARC connection in the back of your TV then it will keep the sound from the sound bar
