An excellent view of the sauropods based on current scientific thinking.
I bought the previous volume in this series/by this author, covering the theropod dinosaurs, a couple of years ago and found it excellent. I was pleased to see the recent release of a second volume on the sauropod dinosaurs, bought it and wasn't disappointed as it is every bit as good as the impressive previous volume on the theropods. Like the previous volume, it is a comprehensive non-academic view but representing up to date paleontological thinking. The artwork is striking but plausible adding to the appeal of the book. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting an up to date, popular view of scientific thinking on the sauropods dinosaurs. On the basis of the two volumes published so far, I presume a further volume (or volumes) covering the ornischian dinosaurs will be forthcoming and look forward to it.

Excellent companion book to the one on Theropods. Wholly based on research evidence.

almost entirely speculation
The sauropod enthusiast will be very disappointed in this 'encyclopedia'. It lists numerous sauropod finds, bur almost all seem to be based on a single bone, or even part of a single bone, and perhaps, in at least one case, a fossilised tree trunk! The illustrations are equally speculative - head shapes shown when no skulls have been fund, colours and markings when nothing is known of these. It seems to have been produced to fill a perceived market of young museum goers. Not recommended.
