Sayonara Sayornis ....
We live in Georgia and we have the Sayornis Phoebe ...aka Eastern Phoebe. You'll know it by it's "phee-bee" call. This has got to be one of the more obstinate, single-minded and stubborn avian in the bird world when it comes to making a nest ...on any shelf-like structure and, in particular, the front porch of our home. Up underneath our front porch we have a narrow shelf created by some trim along the main support beam for the porch roof. We have tried everything to keep these birds from building their half-mud and straw nests to no avail. These birds will mindlessly ...we are talking a bird brain here ...build on too narrow a shelf to support the nest-to-be ...resulting in a consistent mess of mud and moss and straw on the porch below the ill-suited construction site. Apparently when Momma decides "This is the place." ain't no amount of common sense ...once again a bird brain here ...gonna sway her decision even if every beak-ful of nest making material falls off and simply results in a pile of dirt and moss and straw on the porch deck. These Bird-X plastic spikes have saved the day.Oh they tried ...these Phoebes ...but the spikes make it totally impossible for the birds to land on any shelf areas of the porch at our house. The spikes are a clear, hard plastic so they are almost invisible and they have successfully kept Sayornis Phoebe from nesting on our porch. There are two ways to install these spikes; in a single or double line. The coverage distance shown on the box is for a single line of the spikes; cut the distance in half if you need to use a double line. For protecting narrow "shelf" areas, the single line would probably work best ...providing the shelf isn't too wide; that's what worked for my application. The shelf on our porch is about 2-2.5" wide. The spikes have a cant or tilt to them. When they are installed in a double row, they cant outward from each side along their line of installation. With a single row installation, one side will cant outward and one side will point straight up. When installing the spikes in single file you need to determine which way to place the cant and realize for some birds ...if they can get behind the spikes they will ...and your efforts will be for naught. In dealing with my shelf, I installed the spikes with the canted side next to the roof support beam and the straight up side facing outward. With this setup there was no way the birds could get behind the row of spikes ...and it has been successful for deterring the Phoebes for the last two years. You can attach the spikes to your structure using the included glue ...which I didn't ...or you can use nails or small screws; I used small screws ...a little harder to install initially but a whole lot easier to replace if any get broken.Apparently a lot of success, or not, depends on the type of bird you're trying to dissuade ...so I can't guarantee the Bird-X spike will be as successful in every situation for every kind of bird. All I can say is we have said "Sayonara" to the Sayornis Phoebe at our house.

Works well
What a great product to keep our pesky robin off our mailbox. She would perch every day and poop on our black mailbox. Ugggg. The downside is it's very cheaply made but comes with many extras so we can replace as needed. The clear color isn't too obvious so it blends well. We love birds, just not one who only wants to mess on our box. LOL

Plastic + Steel Spikes + Industrial Velcro = No Birds!
We had been having a really bad time trying to discouage birds from nesting around our house. From doves, to pigeons, to robins, and finches ... they ALL were really persistent! (and messy!) We're fine with them nesting in our trees and bushes, but do not like having to clean up the porch and patio areas. The stainless steel spikes (when used alone) worked well enough to keep the larger doves away, but the robins actually sat in between the tynes! At one point, I momentarily considered getting a "pet" Falcon! (Not really, but you get the idea.) Amazon to the rescue! I purchased the Bird-x Bird Spikes, both in the PLASTIC version (it has bendable tynes) and the STAINLESS STEEL version (for strength), so that the two could be "nested" (pardon the pun) in such a way as to create a nicy, sturdy, "pin-cushion" effect. Both versions can be bended and snapped to desired length. I found that simply bending one of the steel tynes over the plastic strip was quite sufficient to hold it all together. This way, ALL sizes of birds would be discouraged. One goal was that the spikes stay securely in place, the other goal was that they COULD be taken down if desired (say, to sell the house). Not wanting to affix the plastic-steel spike combos with nails, glue, or caulk, I hit on a FANTASTIC IDEA: INDUSTRIAL VELCRO! I found it at a local craft store, where it listed being good to secure planting boxes onto porch rails, indoors or out. I cut the Industrial Velcro into small pieces, and left them fastened together. Positioning the velcro with the thicker side against the spike-unit, a simple bit of pressure allowed the whole thing to be safely, and securely affixed to the top of the pillars, and beneath of couple of roof gables, too. This way, if I ever chose to take them down, then later put them back up, I wouldn't have too much of a challenge remembering what went where. As long as the velcros were all facing the same way, all I would have to focus on would be the length of the strips. I did this all around the house in just about an hour. (This included positioning the ladder, climbing up and down, and so forth). BTW, I am a 60-year old gal and not particularly good with tools, but THIS was easy AND it didn't damage my manicure! For the record, the next day we had a windy hail storm and the spikes held in place! I still hear the birds chirp, but they are NOT nexting on MY house!

Worked but Didn't
I gave 5 stars for ease of use, installation and adhesion but giving 3 stars because didn't work well for me. I have a dove who has built a nest in one of my gutters for the past 3 years. I've tried gutter foam blocks and and a couple of other things and they would just build on top of them. Well, tried these out and wouldn't you know...nest built around the spikes. I found the dove sitting in the nest a week or so after installing while sitting on the patio enjoying a bourbon and cigar. Essentially, I gave a cheers to the dove and said welcome to my patio, guess you're family now. LOL
