It works!
I bought this book and followed the 18 week schedule that took me from 55 up to 70 miles per week. I followed the plan and advice religiously, hitting 99% of the miles prescribed and it got me a sub 3 hour marathon time in Edinburgh 2022.Sub 3 was a long held goal for me and I was absolutely delighted with it.The training schedules are tough but they get results, the book also offers loads of good advice and insight into nutrition, strength training, stretching, tactics etc etc.Great book. Thanks Mr Pfitzinger!

The foremost reference book for Marathon training
I'd originally purchased the second edition of this book ahead of my first marathon in 2016. I actually felt like a bit of a spoofer going straight out and buying an "Advanced" marathon training book for my first attempt but quickly put any such embarrassment aside once I started reading and immediately appreciated the value of what's contained in this book .While many people flip straight to the training programmes at the back of the book (and, believe me, those are worth the price of purchase alone), a reader will also gain serious value and become a better runner more generally by reading the preceding sections. These provided the building blocks for a complete novice marathoner like me to scale my running knowledge and abilities through better nutrition, hydration, non-running exercises and stretching, HR banding, and even some pointers for the day itself that I believe better prepared me psychologically for what lay ahead during those 26.2 miles. For my first two marathon attempts, my main usage of the book was the training plans but, for my third, I started to put the other topics mentioned above and covered elsewhere in the book into practice. This has undoubtedly helped round out my general abilities as an athlete and I credit the book with finally helping me in beating the 3hr barrier on my third marathon attempt. For people who want to approach a prospective marathon in a slightly more serious and comprehensive manner, this book will pay you back dividends far exceeding its purchase price. While it's undoubtedly a bit of a hyperbolic statement to make, I'm being genuine in saying this book has had a major influence on my life - hopefully that's recommendation enough!
