MERIWOOLMens Base Layer 100% Merino Wool Heavyweight 400g Thermal Shirt for Men

soft and warm
Like the description says, it's a 400g fabric and it is substantial. Very soft and warm. Pretty trim fit which works well as a base layer. I'd consider myself more in the Large size range but this being wool and me having a penchant for accidentally washing wool stuff with the wrong cycle/detergent and shrinking it, i bought an XL. Out of the package it fit snug. Not too tight but about how i hoped it would fit after a couple washes. I'm going to be careful when cleaning it to try not to shrink it at all. Would recommend sizing up. Not a fan of the elastic band on the back of neck. It sort of pokes you. Also the back of the neck has a size tag which is adhered with glue? it fell off in the wash and left a sticky spot that had to be removed.

This shirt rocks!
I just love this shirt (have it on now). The quality is outstanding and it is super warm. If you don't know what 400g merino wool is like .. this thing is closer to a sweater than a shirt. It is THICK. I have three of these an basically wear them all winter because I am cold natured. This shirt totally is not a base layer. I still wear a base layer of 100g merino wool under this shirt. A 100g merino wool base layer, this bad boy, and a 650 lightweight down jacket get me through winter most of the time. I do swap out the jacket for a serious down puffer when it gets REALLY cold and I am going to be outside. Above freezing, the shirt and a light down jacket are great. I don't hike in this thing because my god it gets hot fast. So, not to totally freak you out :). I. have yet to wash one of these shirts. Wool never stinks. I have worn this shirt for days, slept in it, never bathed, etc. Never stinks and I never wash them. I have a LOT of wool shirts I wear all winter and summer. This particular shirt comes in this 400g monster, as well as a variety of lesser weights. I have a range of them and wear them year round. Just beware marino wool is addictive. These things are SO soft and warm. OK, so I am 5'10" and 185-190 lbs. I am kinda muscular and "big boned" I guess. Normally, I would wear a large or maybe a xl in shirts. I don't think these shirts claim to be fitter, but yeah, they are. I like a loose shirt, so XXL works best for me. So, I guess they run small unless you are a stick. If you like fitted shirts, maybe get your size. I don't know if they pill because I've never washed on. If you DO wash it pay particular attention to instructions or you will shrink it or any other wool garment into something your toddler can't wear. Sorry for the book. Just trying to provide useful information on sizing. It always helps me to read reviews where folks tell how big they are an how sizing goes for a garment.

Best shirt I own
Very warm and comfortable. Can wear for awhile without washing as well because of the merino wool

so warm, a winter game changer
I am a tall slim lady and I get really cold in the winter. I have been slowly collecting wool garments over the last few years and this has been a great addition to the collection. It's hard to find a wool undershirt this thick. It is so warm! I wear a medium in women's clothing and I got the men's small. Great long sleeves, enough for my long long arms. The neck opening is a bit tight, I will say (It would be so nice if I could find thick underlayers with a larger scoop neck or vneck!) I have 2 of these and use them constantly through the winters (wool does not smell as easily, so I launder every 5-7 wears) One of them ended up in the dryer, and thankfully it did not shrink or get ruined, though the texture changed slightly and it is not as soft as it was before- still very wearable and in good shape though! I ended up gifting a couple people in my family one of these for christmas and everyone loves them.I used to be so cold, wearing the box store long johns made of cotton or poly. They never did much, and I ended up with icy limbs, sweaty pits and still shivering through the winters. Now with wool, I am more evenly regulated, the cold is more tolerable, and going into the warmer indoors is not a sauna. As someone with some autonomic body regulation issues, it has helped tremendously (so has my USB battery pack heated vest, but thats another story)

Fantastic for ice climbing
I needed a warm first layer and the 400 gram meriwool top was perfect. It was warm and comfortable. Now, I wear it around the house as my go to long sleeve top. I would not hesitate to buy it again.

Warmer and softer than most
Finding smartwool above 250g to 300g is iffy at best. This is 400g and it is far warmer than smartwool 250g. I will definitely order more.

Well made and 1/2 the price of Filson
I purchased these 400g base layers to see how they compared with others on the market and found them to be well made, warm and I would recommend them to anyone seeking a warm base layer. They are as advertised, and fit to size. The only reason I rated it a 4 instead of 5 is that they are manufactured in China and that is not disclosed on Amazon or the Meriwool website which promotes their company as a US company, which they are. Had I found (and I did try to check out location of manufacture) they were made in China I would have passed on the sale, but I would purchase again since the quality is high and just hold my nose over the fact they are made in China.

Excellent product
I'm 6 ft tall, 210 lbs, 36 inch waist, 44 inch chest, 17 inch neck and have long arms. Size XL fit perfectly. Snug like long underwear should, but not compression like fit. Very comfortable to wear all day. Sleeve length is a bit extra long which is nice for reaching. Back is droptail design which helps keep them tucked in.They are heavy weight without being bulky. Best long underwear I have owned.
