There is no black stuff on the seeds I have received. I have bought several packs and always been happy with the quality. If you are not content with what you received, you should contact Amazon.

Do I need to crack/ grind these up to get better absorption?

I guess you don't have to, but I always do. I have a small electric grinder and grind the linseed fresh each time I use it.
