Delete Duolingo and buy this!
My Spanish learning journey has seen me go use various apps and watch lots of different you tube channels. Although I was putting in the time I never really felt like I was progressing.I bought this book and now I am starting to see my progress. It gives your learning some structure, each lesson building on from the last. I wish I had started with this book, as I am convinced I would be much further along than I am now. This book is now at the core of my studying. I use Pimslur and watch some you tube channels to compliment my learning but this book is what's given me the confidence that my hours spent studying may not be in vain after all.

The best Spanish language book I have found
I am very impressed with this book and exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a resource where I did not need to keep going through multiple sources all the time. I was extremely pleased with how what seemed like difficult topics were explained in such an easily understandable way. I noticed that a previous reviewer said that the book had mistakes but there are not, at least not from what I've noticed. This book focuses on Latin American Spanish so there are sentences that are constructed differently to in Spain. There are also some different words used for different things than the word used in Spain.

Spanish step by step
One of the best courses I have found. It combines grammatical concepts with loads of exercises and examples and vocabulary. There is also an app to help with pronunciation and comprehension. It's a hefty volume of 600 pages and thirty chapters. Hoping to cover a chapter a week. Very detailed and comprehensive.I just have a basic knowledge of some verbs and tenses and an interest in languages. As a complete beginner it would be useful to supplement this with some basic Youtube videos and keep coming back to it to get an in-depth understanding.

Good explanations
Generally a good Spanish book with lots of information and explanations. However there are some errors in the book and weird use of language that have been pointed out to me by Spanish speakers, which is a bit disheartening. For example, they call a toe tobillo (ankle) in one chapter, and odd phrases like "Donde tiene lugar la fiesta" instead of donde esta la Fiesta"

Overall recommended, but with some flaws
After about 7 months of (almost) daily studying I‘m about to finish this book, so I feel like I’m ready to give an honest review.Overall, I’m pretty happy with this book and the progress I made thanks to it. The app helped me a lot with practising and improving my vocabulary and I liked that I could listen to the reading comprehension stories with on there. The structure of the book is pretty good and motivated me to keep going. I also liked the exercises for each grammar part and I loved the English to Spanish translation exercises!! I wish there had been more of those. This book was my main resource for teaching myself Spanish and I can honestly say I progressed a lot. It has the vital grammar information in one place. However, it’s not super in-depth - I’d recommend an additional grammar book if you enjoy learning about grammar. Overall though, I think this book by itself will provide a solid overview of the most important aspects of the Spanish grammar. However, there are some things that I didn’t like. First of all, the author doesn’t mention that the book focuses on Latin American Spanish. I feel like this would be important information to add, especially since pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary differ (at times greatly) between Latin American Spanish and European Spanish and learners might want to focus on one or the other to avoid confusion, especially if they combine several resources.Furthermore, I did not like the repetition chapters at the end as some of them were pretty much copies of earlier chapters, which felt a bit lazy to me. The chapter on the subjunctive pretty much featured twice, grammar explanations, exercises and all! At first I thought it was a printing mistake, but after rereading the preface I realised that this was intentional. I honestly felt a bit cheated, especially as the repetition chapters form quite a big chunk. While I do appreciate the fact that they wanted the readers to repeat and refresh previously acquired knowledge, I still think this could have been handled differently. I would have welcomed a short refresher in combination with more new exercises - especially English to Spanish translations to put the knowledge into practise. Overall there could have been more English to Spanish translation exercises. Those actually helped me a lot. When it comes to the short stories I have to say that some of them were pretty weird. I don’t expect great literature from a book for beginners, but some of the stories seemed very random and were not exactly fun to read. Honestly, at times they sounded like a beginner had written them to practise their newly acquired vocabulary. Also, regarding the vocabulary - the book doesn’t encourage learners to study the vocabulary first. Once you are done reading the grammar explanations you jump straight into the exercises. I would strongly advise to study the vocabulary for each grammar part before progressing to the exercises to avoid frustration. As I said before, I progressed a lot with this book and I enjoyed studying with it. I combined it with listening to podcasts and watching shows and I’m now comfortable reading books at level B1 and above. There’s definitely room for improvement (especially regarding the repetition chapters), but I would definitely recommend this book to beginners who don’t mind that they’ll be focusing on Latin American Spanish.
