Amazing ps2 port that’s even better on switch
This brought me back to my youth. This was an amazing ps2 port but with the updated graphics and now analog movement of the characters (not previously on ps2 version) it’s even better and more enjoyable especially on the go!!!!

A great revisit for fans but YMMV if you're new to the series
Onimusha: Warlords is action-adventure that was originally released during the early PS2 days of 2001 and has you playing as Samanosuke Akechi, a samurai trying to save Princess Yuki & take down Nobunaga Oda and his Genma (basically demon) forces as they assault Gifu Castle. The story of Onimusha: Warlords takes place in an alternate Sengoku period in Japan since obviously Genma aren't real but it has real-world historical figures & events so you'll notice that the story just assumes that you have this prior knowledge at times. It doesn't really detract too much from the game if you don't but you'll find that not everything is explained for that reason. Voice acting is kind of all over the place which wasn't uncommon during that time, however even the simplistic mo-cap by today's standards still hold up well during cut scenes. You'll eventually obtain the Oni Gauntlet which allows you to absorb different types of Genma essence\souls to restore health or mana and upgrade your Oni weapons\seals that you'll obtain as you progress in the story. Combat hasn't changed at all since 2001 so much of what's actually in the combat system isn't explained unless you figure it out or look it up. There is a block, parry, normal, magic attack & more. You are limited in your magic attacks by how much mana you have available & how much the attack consumes based off of your upgrade level. You'll also encounter fairly straightforward puzzles or locked doors that will impede your progress that you'll need to figure out. You'll also want to be aware that there are also hidden items that don't always have any visual clue that they're there, so be prepared to spam the interact button on nearly anything in the game. Enemy types are also quite varied which have a distinct Japanese flair compared with something like Devil May Cry.The biggest detracting factor here is the age of the game, the remastered effort isn't bad with a lot of quality of life changes but this is still the same game overall. There are also no additions from Genma Onimusha from the original Xbox here either. This will be a fairly challenging experience for those who haven't played any of the games in this series. (Think Resident Evil 4 or newer players starting the original Resident Evil 0-3) I would strongly consider watching some gameplay footage on YouTube before you buy this. I would also add that as the 1st game, it doesn't have the same extra content as the rest of the series so I would highly suggest to get this at a sale price. For returning players, this will still be a fun experience despite the game's age. I personally have played every other Onimusha game on the PS2 except this & Blade Warriors so it was nice to see where the series started. I would only ask Capcom to stop wasting their resources on Resident Evil: Resistance and get back to porting the rest of the series. (Cmon Capcom, I just need my Dawn of Dreams fix.....)Onimusha: Warlords is a great throwback experience of the action-adventure days on the PS2 and I personally think it's worth your time if you're interested, just know what you're getting into before picking this up.
