CCNP Routing and Switching Route 300-101 Official Cert Guide

Read the book as a textbook not as a novel
I suggest buying the Kindle version and hard cover. I can understand people's frustration if they just have the Kindle version of this book. With Cisco Press, there are the reading itself, figures, and then examples. You almost need 3 monitors to read all of this. And that's exact what I suggest, multiple copies of the book both in electronic version and the hard copy. I actually own the Kindle version, hard copy, plus I read this on SafariBooksOnline.com and that's basically what I need to follow all of this stuff.Since I am already a CCNA and I have taken CCNP courses but never got my CCNP certification, this is the right book for me. If you are new to CCNP fresh off your CCNA then the Foundation Learning Guide will be the book for you. Then come to this book.I think Kevin Wallace did a great job. It's just that it's a traditional textbook and it's not laid out like the CCNA is in the Cisco Networking Academy or a course on the Cisco Learning Network Store. There's a lot of flipping back a bunch of pages to see the figure they are refering to. But nonetheless the way the book is written given real expectations of what Kevin Wallace had to work with is second to none. This is a fantastic book.

Pros: unlike some technical books I bought in the Kindle version, this book displays correctly on my Kindle Fire.Cons: Kindle version does not include access to the practice tests, which is really the main reason I buy Cisco books for the tests. Since the discount for the electronic version is not that big, this omission does not make sense. All you get access to is some videos and three or so pdfs.I returned the Kindle version and bought the hardback (and yes, I saw the comments about the other content issues with this book).

Best CCNP ROUTE book
Kevin Wallace seems to be the best author Cisco Press has obtained. This book takes technical commands and concepts in a subject matter (routing) I thought I'd have problems absorbing, but didn't. It's an easy and comprehensive read. Little long. Big. But workable.

Not the sole source for the exam
You should get the exam topics from Cisco. Compare and see what this book is missing. If you study only this book It will be hard to pass. Look up the missing topics. Not really a comprehensive cert book.

I like this Guide
I like this certification guide. I only wish it had a companion DVD tutorial. Cisco Press does have an online video course, but that is not an option for me. So, for now it's slow reading.

Good book but disappointing
I have the old version of this book and decided to purchase this one for the new 300-101 exam. It is disappointing that this book does not cover or even mention all the topics that are actually required for the exam. In addition to this the material has hardly changed (copy paste including the mistakes) from the previous book and the practice exams contained on the disk are identical to the old version. Whilst they thoroughly test your knowledge on the material covered in the book, because all the topics aren't there it's nothing like the real thing. I took all questions in the practice tests from this book (~180) and scored 96%. When I sat the real exam for the 1st time I failed and I don't think I had a single question even remotely close to what's in this book. This book is good don't get me wrong but considering this is the "Offical Cert Guide" I would strongly advise not to simply rely on this alone.

Official Cert Guide is very misleading title - Barely covers 60% of syllabus
For a book to be called "Official Cert Guide" and published by Cisco Press, there are various expectation it needs to live up to, not least of which is covering the topics of the exam. Based on the 300-101 exam I took, this book would have scored me a maximum of about 60%.Although the author is listed as Kevin Wallace, almost everything in it comes from the previous CCNP Route exam book (642-902) by Wendell Odom. The bulk of it is a word for word and diagram for diagram duplicate, although a couple of chapters are left out and a couple are added. Sadly, things like PPPoE, PAP and CHAP, which were in the original book were dropped for this book - despite being on the syllabus for the new exam (and featuring in a couple of questions on my exam). The coexistence of IPv4 and IPv6 featured quite a bit in the original 642-902 book, but only get a passing mention in this new revision - for example, NAT64 had a third of a page dedicated to it, but, again, this featured in a couple of questions on my exam.About 10% of the questions in my exam were around NetFlow, yet there was not one single mention of it in this book. Similarly for HSRP. Going from my experience in the exam, and the actual syllabus, both of these need at least a chapter dedicated to them.Of course, no one should rely on one single source for all of their exam revision. However, this book should be seen as a supplement to other more inclusive study material, not as a framework to base your study around. If this had been published by anyone other than Cisco Press, and didn't include "Official Cert Guide" in its title then I would have probably rated it a lot higher, as it does cover the details of EIGRP, OSPF, BGP and Route Distribution quite thoroughly - but that alone won't get you through the exam!

The book is let down by a rather scant index which makes the book pretty difficult to use as a reference book
Usual Cisco quality, the content is accurate and comprehensive, unfortunately. The book is let down by a rather scant index which makes the book pretty difficult to use as a reference book. I.e. Its easy to read cover to cover, but, difficult to find specific paragraphs. ../Steve

Its okay
Don't expect to know this book cover to cover and pass the exam. It doesn't cover enough, but what it does cover it does well. The book is worth buying but needs to be assisted by other sources, read through exam objectives thoroughly
