If you've been working straight from skeins or spending time hand-winding, I highly recommend this winder! It works really well and makes really neat, cute cakes of yarn.Assembly: To make the package smaller, it does come with some assembly required. The directions are a little lacking, but it wasn't hard to figure out.Setup: The style of clamp is a little bit annoying to tighten, but it results in a really solid hold. The clamp itself is VERY adjustable to table thickness, which is another bonus to the style used.Use: You'll have to figure out the ideal speed, but it goes pretty quickly. I found it helpful NOT to have the skein too close to the winder, because it gives me more opportunity to stop winding if there's a tangle. It winds rather loosely on its own, but you can add more tension (and therefore tightness) to the yarn by letting it run through your fingers.Results: Once you figure out a good speed and tension, the cakes are really neat and tidy! It almost makes me wish I stored my yarn on shelves, because I would enjoy stacking up a bunch of these cute little cakes for display. But the most important part for me: the center-pull yarn comes RIGHT out as I crochet, which does NOT happen when I crochet straight from a skein!!!Size: I wish it were bigger, so I could easily wind larger skeins. It's perfect for the smaller "normal" sized skeins; the last one I wound was 4.5 ounces (specifically 277 yards of worsted weight) and it started to bump the yarn-guiding arm at the end. I plan to experiment with a double-ball winding solution I found on the internet, though. Google "THE SIMPLE HACK TO DOUBLE YOUR YARN WINDER CAPACITY" to see the trick.Apparent quality: So far, so good! The build seems solid, it survived my 7-year-old grinding the gears a bit when he didn't stop for a tangle, and it's not squeaky (yet).

Considering I bought this 8 plus years ago and use frequently I’m shocked and happy that it still works with no issues and I would buy again. The only annoying thing is if you really get cranking the yarn ball can fly off the base somewhat easily. Otherwise nothing bad to say, good price and product.

The media could not be loaded.  I like this wonder because it was easy to assemble and made nicely formed cakes however I do wish that the hole in the center was smaller on the finished product. I also wish the metal guide was removable or folded down for storage so I could put it back in the box when I’m not using it. I tried to fold it back down but all I manage to do was stress the plastic ridge holding it in place so I gave up for fear of cracking it and then having a loose guide. I don’t get why they would design it that way. Once you fold it up in place for use you cannot fold it back down to put it back in the box. At least I couldn’t find a way that wouldn’t result in breaking it. I also wish it make tighter cakes. They’re nicely formed but a bit looser than I would prefer. I gave it four stars overall because it was easy to assemble, produced nicely formed cakes and was easy to use. In addition I like the color compared to others on the market that are less appealing colors to me. A small thing but I do like the colors. Lastly It opens wide enough to clamp onto my lap desk which made me happy since I don’t have a coffee table just an ottoman I keep a heavy lap desk on top of.

I love this product because noting is worse then getting to the end of a hank or skein and it knotting itself into chaos right as you want to finish a piece. I will say that the table clamp isn't the most sturdy and has come off a table before, though I imagine that isn't too much of an issue if you find a better table to clamp it on than the ones I have tried. Also the metal pole that is used to feed the yarn doesn't like to stay folded in transit and tends to catch and dig at the plastic when folded, again not an issue if it is rarely moved. Still the winding goes quickly and I get consistent beautiful cakes. I hope that one day they might have a way to change the center attachment so that it can hold a bit more yarn with a tighter core, but I'm working on making that replacement for myself. (Just note that the winder can only do about 100g of yarn at a time so for most store bought skeins this will mean splitting the yarn in two cakes, which can be a good thing on small projects, but means changing the yarn out in larger projects). Cakes are also just pleasant to squeeze because they are so light and being able to wind them like this really shows off any color changes if it is a self stripping yarn.

I got this because my family has been doing more and more crochet and winding yarn balls my hand takes forever and leaving them alone makes them knot up.I got this and my kids spent a ton of time having fun and winding up all their yarn which is now tons more organized.The only downside it is that is too small to do an entire skein of yarn so we usually end up turning each skein into 2 cakes. This isn't a big deal for us because we mainly crochet animals but if you were doing big things like blankets you might want a bigger one.Super easy to use and set up - we found it easiest to have one person holding the yarn and watching for tangles while the other spun the handle, but it can easily be done with one person. I love that it easily stores away.

Bought this to make yarn balls out of scraps to use up all available yarn ends. Love it!! Makes life so much easier in many ways. My grandchildren spend hours winding yarn for me and enjoy doing it too!! Great babysitting activity and they are "helping Grandma".

Really happy with this purchase! Keeps my yarn stash nice and tidy, and makes new skeins easier to work with.
