Love, Tragedy, and Family after Nuclear War
If you buy only one poetry book this year, let it be this one! The author explores the full range of human experience through the lens of the effects of colonization and nuclear testing on modern Micronesian people. Not the best poetry
The poetry wasn't very creative. a modern poet lacking some poetic elements that would make the poems more powerful.I do enjoy her one poem, "tell them"

Simply an amazing soul.
Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner is an inspiration, calling on the human race to social and political change to guard against the very personal effects climate change is having in The Marshallese Islands, and by extension, the world as a whole, all through her poetry. If you ever have the chance to meet her or watch and hear her in person, please do. Simply an amazing soul.

This is the first collection by Marshallese poet Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner and one worthy of any book shelf. Whether you're well-versed in the history of the Marshall Islands or can barely locate Micronesia on a map, Jetnil-Kijiner's words resonate strongly because they're anchored in universal themes -- family, culture, identity, and belonging. In Iep Jaltok, Jetnil-Kijiner addresses global issues like climate change and migration through poems that offer a first-hand glimpse into a country and people little known by the outside despite historical ties to other Pacific Islands, Asia, Europe and America. Through her powerful spoken word performances and as an advocate for climate justice, Jetnil-Kijiner has garnered global recognition. Now she offers her own open basket of treasures for readers to discover.
