Q: Are the side pockets big enough to hold a travel coffe mug (450ml, 18cm)?

Not sure, I got my sunglasses case in which is quiet chunky but it is more torpedo shaped than a round coffee mug - would not like to commit to say yes without trying it out

Q: A lot of the comments mention a bad smell. Is this an issue with all the bags?

I do not personally own one of these bags, I gave the one I bought to a friend as a Christmas present. She is currently away on holiday and has taken the bag with her. She has let me know that she is finding the bag extremely useful. She did not mention any odour attached to it - just expressed her delight with it.
