Four: A Divergent Collection

Good read but....
It's a good read but wished it was a full book as a counter part of divergent. It's selected scenes from divergent they told from fours point of view. Also some of how he comes to choosing dauntless.

Four is a great book for fans of the Divergent series!
CAUTION! SPOILERS, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!Four, by Veronica Roth is a the post apocalyptic prequel to the trilogy to the divergent series. This book is about the life of a character named Tobias Eaton prior to his life in the faction called dauntless. In this post apocalyptic novel, the society values five characteristics most, and they separated themselves into factions based on the one they valued most,or had the aptitude for. Each citizen is required to take an aptitude test so they can decide which faction they are most fit for. Tobias, tested for his previous faction, Abnegation. However he decides to escape his abusive father and he chooses dauntless. He went from being selfless to brave. In his new faction, he excels in his training. So much so that he ranks number one in the training. He even received the nickname "Four"(hence the title of the book), because that was his number of fears, which is a record for any dauntless member, ever. Most people had around thirteen to eighteen fears. Later he found out that he was divergent, which is very rare and most people would end up factionless if others knew. He also discovers his mother is alive and the leader of the faction less. Tobias resents her for leaving him with his father, who had abused him for years. It seems as though in that family they were all leaders, Tobias, one of ten selected to become a faction leader, his father the faction leader of abnegation, and his mother the leader of the faction less. While in his training to become leader, he discovers his faction leader was working with another faction to create a dauntless army so that one faction become leader over all the others. Tobias also meets the love of his life Tris through his experiences in the dauntless faction.I enjoyed reading this book a lot, especially after reading the trilogy. I like seeing the life of Tobias prior to meeting Tris and his life in Dauntless. I enjoyed seeing how he found out his mother was alive, and how he excelled in his training at dauntless. I especially loved seeing how he developed from someone weak and hurting into someone who looked so strong and unbreakable, even though on the inside he was broken. Tobias somehow managed to escape the oppression of his father even though there were many risks involved in the choice. I like to believe that everyone could do that, that if we are in a situation that has no escape, we find one anyway. There is always another option whether it's obvious or not. It can be difficult and terrifying, but worth it in the end.I would recommend this book to those who have read the Divergent series. Be warned though, it is not as good as the series itself. But it's very interesting to see how Tobias became who he was and how he changed so much. I think that this book is also good to read if you are going through challenges, it's very relatable in many ways. However, I would not recommend this book to anyone that has not read the Divergent series, make sure to read that first! Also don't read this if you didn't like the divergent series because you will like this even less. There's not a very meaty plot compared to the trilogy. There's just a little more clarifications and details you didn't get in the trilogy.

Recreating my Love of this Series
The Transfer:I really enjoyed reading about Four's assessment and choosing ceremony. The series did well to allude to and describe Tobias' relationship whit his father. However, it was wonderful to really understand him through his point of view. It really shows how the little things like the blue sculpture was a such a rebellious act of both Four and his mother. I read this after I read the series. I think it would be better to read near book one because, as a reader, I already know more than Four by this point. The Initiate:I continue to enjoy Four's story as he learns to hide part of who he is and becomes Dauntless. I recommend reading this after Divergent. Once again, I know a lot more than Four. I like how this story reveals how Tobias changed. It even hints to the back tattoo that he has in the series. Of course, you have to read it to catch the clues in here. It wouldn't hurt to read this first, but it would take away from Tris' story. This is the first real appearance of some of the faults in the system. It is also the first major sign of divergence, yet to be names. The Son:Four's past continues to show signs of whom he chooses to become. This story is where he is pulled in two new directions, he already refused his father's way in a The Initiate. He remains a rebel by choosing his own place within, yet out of, the Dauntless faction. He teeters between his his old faction and new faction as he realizes he doesn't want to be classified only as one. This is symbolized as he begins to get his tattoo that could classify him as a "faction traitor" or even, Tori named it, a Divergent. Those who are aware during simulations and "refuse" to take one faction. I enjoyed this story as it brings us closer to the days of Divergent and revelations are made. This story continues to give insight to Four's character and his actions within the trilogy. The Traitor:This conclusion of the Four short stories really walk the reader through some of the same stolen moments with Tris from Divergent. However, it is from Four's point of view. It reveals how Four came to rescue Tris while she was being attacked and his view of both their fear landscapes. It also reveals how Four found out about the attack prior to it happening and how he could not count on the factionless/his mom for support, while his father did not even believe the attack was going to happen although he was suspicious if Max. I really enjoyed reading Four's perspective of some of the more emotional interactions between him and Tris. I suggest that you read Free Four before reading this because that was also a scene from Divergent in Four's pov, but it takes place before the events in this text. This story focuses on Tobias truly becoming brave as he watched the strength and courage of Tris

Well-written but disappointing
The book was great at first but I lost interest about halfway through. I really did not enjoy the part where it overlapped with the original book and Tris arrived. I thought it would be interesting but it just felt like a partial retelling without as much detail due to the point of view. It would have been confusing if I had not read the original series. I think a book about Four that came after the third book would be interesting, showing us how he deals with the ending events of the third book.

Divergent
