Gorgeous book, great for pencils.
I have been a fan of Susan Carlsons line art almost since she first arrived on the instagram adult coloring scene. I have been purchasing her line art PDFs, and hand made books through her etsy shop from the creation of it as well. To say I’m hooked would be a truthful expression of joy. I love her art, and the fun it provides me as a colorist. Now with the release of her newest book on Amazon through the publisher Create Spaces, the next level has been achieved for her and us as consumers of her creative contributions to our lives. Her art journal volume 1 isn’t just a colorist coloring book of line art only. It’s a place to remind yourself of the process, and grow your hobby. She gives you several pages of tips and commentary that are very useful. I found myself learning more, and reminded of things I had let slip in my coloring that I wanted to once again focus on those helpful techniques she included in the pages of this book. Then the best new things you won’t find in other books besides of course lovely original line art. Pages to test your colors and mediums on, these pages are designed for thoughts as well as your coloring plans. I’ve never seen such a thoughtful useful addition to any of the 30+ books I have in my coloring collect to date. She included extra pages in the back of the book as well. The color charts and other tools are wonderful tools.I think what I find fun is I can now look back at what I was thinking when I was coloring a page, or better yet I can pick up a page from the past and find all the colors I was using and start new w/o missing a beat. I have a record of blends that worked, ones that didn’t, and how a page developed. This is helping me to grow in my own process as a coloring hobbiest. I have no art training and I’m a very much color by the seat of my pants and best guesses. So this book gives me space to change that, and I LOVE it.It’s a great book for my pencils. The paper isn’t perfect for water/wet mediums, it takes a light touch with these things, as Susan isn’t offered a choice on the paper available through this company yet. But as a smaller artist working independently to get her work out there for us, I’m just super grateful there is a way! So click the amazon button get this book delivered to your door, break out your pencils and find a whole new experience in this art journal and support our independent coloring artist.

Unique
Unique and charming approach to journaling and organization of artistic pursuits! Very happy but paper isn’t to my taste. However, the artist suggests in her introduction that having the softcover book deconstructed to print onto the paper of my choosing (for my use exclusively) is ok with her.

Beautiful pictures in the most thoughtfully-designed book
This book is truly fantastic: the pictures are beautiful, with a selection of both intricate designs and images with more open space. The design of the book itself is also incredibly thoughtful. It's full of wonderful details and places to test colors and experiment with techniques. I LOVE that it includes color charts, both at the back and alongside each (single-sided!) full page: I am perpetually starting new pieces and forgetting which colors I was using, so this feature is perfect for me. I was a little nervous about paper quality, but it's a lot better than I imagined: it works well with my prismacolors and with pablos and faber castells. The paper might be a little thin for water-based material, but since the pages are single-sided it might be doable; the single-sided pages allows for use of markers and fineliners as well, which is great: you don't have to decide which page to sacrifice if this is your preferred medium. The book also has a lot of tips and techniques, making it great for beginning colorists, while the decision to include selections from each plate on the facing pages creates a lot of opportunity for experimentation. I highly recommend this book to every colorist!

Stunning Line Art
I've been a fan of Ruby Charm for a while now, and I was so excited when I found out that this book was coming. This art journal is cleverly designed and extremely well thought out. When you color, you always want to try out your colors before applying to the art. Then if you find some combinations that you love, where do you keep them? Susan has thought of all that. There are places to do samples, including small snippets of the artwork to try out. There are color chart pages and color sample pages, note pages, and lots of information about coloring and media. Another interesting aspect is that Susan has placed the title in white on black on the reverse of each full-size piece of line art. So there's nothing to compete with your finished work. And then there is the line art itself - simply stunning!

probably my least favorite coloring book - i am sure its fine for some
it does say art journal so guess that is different than i really wanteddon't like the paper and if you want to take out any pages to help with coloring you must cut them outmaybe because its considered a journal that's why the paper is different and why its not easy to take out any pages - some people might like that there are 2 pages 1 to put the information on the colors you choose and medium and practice and one to color

Like a wonderful journal!
These designs are amazing. The paper isn’t the best quality so you cannot color as many layers as some other books. However, the designs are wonderful and very creative. Also having the opposite page to test colors and keep notes makes this feel almost like a journal. Great purchase. Despite the paper quality, I want to purchase all of her books!

Gorgeous book!
I love this book! The art is very high quality and quite different from the type of pictures you find in most coloring books. There are lots of suggestions and tips about how to improve your coloring and new techniqes to try. And there are lots of pictures on the instructional pages to practice on.Unlike most artists, this author is very up front about the paper quality and actually encourages you to remove the pages and copy them onto heavier quality paper. I will certainly do this, as I like to use Inktense pencils and the paper in this book paper will not withstand that--I would say it is equivalent to CreateSpace paper. If you are willing to make copies of the drawings, I can highly recommend this book to anyone looking for lovely and unique drawings.
