I purchased the silver 40" version at around £18, largely out of curiosity.As a piece of masculine jewellery or a keychain or the like it looks fairly good but as it is steel it is rather heavy to wear comfortably. If I wore this around my neck for a couple of hours I would definitely have a sore neck.As a self defence item I am not convinced. I seriously doubt that wielded as a single strand whip it would stand up to much force. In principal it could be used to entangle an attackers arm or leg to pull them off balance. It could be doubled over a couple of times as a cosh and might last longer that way than as a single strand. Wrapped around your hand or wrist it could offer some protection against a blade but I would definitely not care to put that to the test.For my protection I would have more faith in the 140db personal alarm I usually carry. When that goes off no-one will want to stay anywhere near and it is much less likely to draw questions afterwards about use of "reasonable force".The other issue is quality. When unpacked many of the links were stiff or would not move through their full range. A spray with silicon lubricant (I use it for my bicycle chain as it is less messy than oil) and wipe clean mostly cured this without leaving it sticky.Three stars because it is basically what it claims to be but no more than that as I would not care to rely on it in a serious situation.

This chain is very strong and the quality is amazing.
