A mainstream album
Donovan made a triumphant return to the charts in 1973, with the release of his surprise comeback album 'Cosmic Wheels'. He collaborated once more with producer Mickie Most, and the pair of them created another little bit of magic together. The result was a very mainstream album, which once again showed how versatile the Glasgow-born poet and folkie was, by changing his sound once again to that of contemporary glam-rock/pop.There are still some songs on here which nod back to the old Donovan, namely the catchy and pretty 'Only the Blues', and the equally endearing 'Appearances', but the excellent, rocking title track, and the stone-cold gem which is 'Sleep', are more in the same vein as artists such as T-Rex and early Alice Cooper especially, both of whom rated him highly, and are quoted as being influenced by him. Suzi Quatro, who was riding high at the time, provides backing vocals on track number six, the wonderfully trippy 'The Music Makers'. Whilst this creative project is not up there with my favourite Donovan albums, and it's a solid set of songs.Although 'Cosmic Wheels' would prove to be the last of his chart-wise successful albums, peaking at no.25 in America, and going ten better over in Britain, Donovan would go onto create many other worthwhile records (which he continues to do so to this day), which are well-worth discovering as well, and if you decide to seek them out, then you'll realise that there is so much more to this elfin faced 'blast-from-the-past' than those catchy Sixties singles like 'Mellow Yellow' and 'Jennifer Jupiter'. In 2004, this release was pared up with Donovan's next album, the spiritual 'Essence to Essence' on the single CD Cosmic Wheels/Essence To Essence .
