The Jazz Drummer's Workshop: Advanced Concepts for Musical Development

There's a reason this is getting 5 stars across the board.
After purchasing The Art of Bop I was intrigued, impressed and excited to see more wisdom John Riley has to offer. I was not let down. I can't stress enough how important it is to get through and understand Art of Bop before taking on the concepts in this book without feeling overwhelmed. Riley's other two books follow a systematic progression and theme. This book is a collection of all the articles/exercises he wrote for Modern Drummer magazine over the course of ten years. Rather than follow an evolutionary flow, this book contains handfuls of idiosyncratic ideas to address situations where most of his students struggled. While this book is very difficult for me so far, the information is delivered in a way that is incredibly inspiring and it's always easy to understand where the journey is taking you. Learning chops and interdependence between limbs is one thing. This book breaks that down while simultaneously guiding you with sage advice that transcends the style or even the instrument you play. It's something all musicians can benefit from. It puts the masters under a microscope with detailed analysis of what they were doing, why they did it, and why it's still important to find your own voice instead of seeking to emulate someone else entirely. Ideas aren't simply presented at face value. They are accompanied by philosophical wisdom. That torch is always carried with the understanding that the goal of a drummer is to make the rest of the band sound good. Not just making a drummer in a band sound good.Riley is a humble and extremely talented educator with a real passion for the music. This book is an evolution of all the best ideas from the past while always keeping the main goal at the forefront. Which is to make music that makes you feel good with people who are fun to play music with in a context where you are merely limited by your own imagination.

A very nice book, the best one !!!
This book is organized into 3 sections : 1) - Concepts : Groove, cross-training, time matters, second-line applications, odd times ... ; 2) - Masters speak : Maximize your soloing, comping with great drummers ( Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Max Roach ... ) ; 3) - The chop shop : The warm-up, the Moeller stroke ... Some of these lessons will be absorbed immediately or will require several hours, days or months ! To help you, many examples are played on the CD so that you can hear the sound, balance and feeling, very nice ! This book is a great supplement to the prior books ( "The Art of Bop Drumming" and "Beyong Bop drumming" ), I highly recommend these 3 books, it will help you to understand the drummer's role in a jazz band, to improve your fluidity, level, technique, groove, creativity, musicianship ... I wish I could take lessons wiyh John Riley, if you can, go on !!! He is a renowned player, teacher and author, has performed with a who's who in the jazz music field ! This book is highly recommended, I enjoy it every day, one of the best jazz book I ever had, you can trust me !!! Emilio Leroy ( France - Dordogne ).

Learn from one of the best !!!
I find all of John Riley's books to be great !!! Not only is he a terrific player, he's a very good educator. This book covers holding a groove, in depth studies of 3/4 & 5/4 odd time comping and soloing, style and analysis (comping and soloing) of drummers such as Elvin Jones, Billy Higgins, Tony Williams, and Philly Joe Jones, chapters on moeller technique and hand technique. The odd times chapters are very thorough. The style and analysis is very interesting with commentary aboutsome of the playing. So it's not just reading licks but understanding and analyzing what's going on, whatresult it produced, and perhaps why it was done. Helps a drummer to incorporate it into his playing easierwhen the concept is understood, instead of just trying to "stick a lick" into our playing.

John Riley hits the mark.
Once again John has written a magnificent "how to" book that should be in EVERY serious drummers' library. The examples (and the stories of the great musicians behind them)are wonderful for use in actual performance situations not just in a practice room or private lesson session. It'll keep me and my students quite busy for some time. Wish I'd thought of this one.BUTCH MILES

Good book
It's a great book to work out of! When they say advanced they mean it. I as a new comer to jazz thought It wouldnt be that advanced. So I bought a couple easier books to get me started then I am going to go back to this one. It has plenty of in depth exercises and text explaining it. Great book!

Alles in gut verdauliche Häppchen verpackt.
