To my surprise, this book gives u in-depth knowledge about history and ritual related to Kalaripayyatu and it’s origin. Those who are interested in Kalaripayattu, they must read this book once. Trust me you will love this book. Thanks to the writer for such an descriptive book on Kalaripayattu.

We can get the information contained in this book from the internet these days. Not a detailed book about techniques

Knowledge always give confidence

The book appears to be a pirated edition, not the original from Oxford Books because almost all the pictures are not visible! Remember, the pictures are of martial art postures and positions! It is very sad indeed!

Few topics explained very well and he used to point out topics from foreigners which are not true always... ..

This book, by a western academic who spent extensive periods of time studying Kalarippayattu in India, provides an interesting, detailed ethnographic survey of this little known martial art. Kalari is a complete art in the sense that it includes conditioning exercises, empty hand forms, a variety of weapons (staff, spear, daggers, and swords, including an amazing long flexible sword), holistic health practices such as massage, and spiritual practices. The art is based on Ayurvedic principles, and includes (like Chinese martial arts) a system of vital points (called marma) which can be used for either healing or causing harm. The author gives extensive information about the history, rituals, and social aspects of this South Indian art. The book is not a how-to, instructional manual, but a scholarly study with extensive footnotes. However, it is packed with lots of cool pictures. Highly recommended!

Not what I expected. A scholarly work without the type of information I am looking for. It is a fascinating read and would recommend it.

Interesting read, I haven't finished it. But it clarifys my understanding.
