I've first learned about ArchiMate during a TOGAF training several years back. The break out session was rather short and we couldn't make too much ground. I later tried it myself, however the examples I found were not always conclusive and so I gave up again. Recently I came across the book from Gerben. At a first glance the price seemed rather high. I finally decided to buy the book. It provides you with an open an honest walk through the ArchiMate language. Most valuable I found all the examples from reality as well as the step by step development of patterns helping to deal with standard situations in the life of an enterprise architect. For me the book was worth it's price. Maybe the author could consider to give away the PDF version for those having bought the book for there reference.

A great book
This books is the recommended standard book for learning and applying the Archimate Enterprise Architecture modeling language. The content of the book is accessible and clear. It's possible to do useful modeling after absorbing the material in the first about 20 pages. The book has technical knowledge butalso wisdom and advice-from-experience on how to model. Why four stars? the book is most relevant to the previous version of the Archimate Language. IT's easy to see how to apply it to the most recent version. However and update would be most welcome. Don't let this stop you from buying the book.

Essential Book for Enterprise Architects
Mastering ArchiMate should be required reading for accelerating the knowledge and skills of serious Enterprise Architects. I foresee incorporating this book as a required textbook for my graduate course in Enterprise Architecture and for the training of professional architects. Of course, it would follow material on overall Enterprise Architecture because it helps explain in concrete ways how transformation can be realized across the business, architecture, and infrastructure layers. There is no other book that comes close to it in terms of narrating and illustrating, with very practical scenarios and examples, how modeling can bring rigor to transformation initiatives. I would have liked to see more development of the Motivation and the Implemenation and Migration Extensions, but I really appreciate that the book includes a primer on BPMN, as well as showing how to use ArchiMate for Risk and Security.

Clear explanations for these complex concepts
The author provides clear instruction and insight on how to learn and use ArchiMate. The actually specification is somewhat challenging to comprehend at least for me. I was able to read and absorb the TOGAF spec, but not the ArchiMate one. So this book was definitely worth the effort. I ended up redrawing each of the examples as a way to reinforce the concepts.

This is an excellent book and I was able to grasp concepts faster when compared to Archimate Spec doc. The book contains may real project examples which the reader can easily correlate and implement the elements and relationships. Hoping to complete book in a soon and take up certification. Many efforts were put to save paper space and real estate. The text and diagrams are mixed in inappropriate manner, which sometimes causes the reader much confusion. I was planning to give 5 stars, but for this reason I am rating as 4 stars.Happy Learning !!!

Beautifully Illustrated - Masterfully Written
Gerben Wierda's book is an exceptional contribution to visually documenting aspects of enterprise architecture, using ArchiMate 3.0 - a beautifully illustrated book - from a keen mind that presents a balanced and holistic view of a complex subject. I would liken my appreciation of Gerben's book to Edward Tufte's timeless book, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information

This is a superb way to learn Archimate, don't think you are going to read it once and get everything out of it. This is a read and re read. I rarely give reviews but this is an outstanding read for anyone who is trying to model Enterprise Architecture

Contains practical examples and all of the answers of my questions on modelling with Archimate
The first few chapters look like boring, but then you start to understand the reasons of having those chapters. The book is really nice with tons of examples and styles. Before reading the book I was looking for online trainings, I even read the Archimate Language Specification and they are not very helpful. But this book helped me to answer various questions about how to model my specific cases. There is a free version of the first couple of chapters published by the author. After reading that version I decided to purchase the book.I strongly recommend this to whoever wants to learn enterprise architecture modelling.

The bible of the EA practitioner
This book is a masterpiece. It introduces the reader in the concepts of today’s most powerful enterprise ADL and illustrates these with very useful real-life examples. On top of modeling, it indirectly also educates on design principles. For me as an enterprise security architect, the support for risk and control as motivation extensions was particularly useful. Already version I of the book boosted my productivity; Version II adds several advanced concepts, distinguishing primary, secondary and tertiary architectures. The best bang for the buck in EA!

A fantastic introduction to Archimate that really allows you to get going with modelling architectures
As a technical architect working within small to medium sized companies, I'd been looking for a better, unambiguous way to describe the various architectures I work with. When I initially discovered the Archimate modelling language, I was looking for resource that could explain not only the syntax but how to use it effectively and practically.Having bought Mastering Archimate, I've found this book indispensable. The author explains the syntax effectively in the first part; but what I've found most valuable are the patterns which he has created, I can now effectively take these and use them as sort of "templates component" to apply them to my architectures (for example, from modelling database nodes to modelling excel applications). The advanced topics are also very helpful, and I've found that I've been able to pick and choose which particular topics within the advanced subjects I'd like to use to help speed up applying the language to my specific situations. In addition, the author has been exceptional at responding to questions that I've sent. All in all, I've found the book to be well written and very thorough, and almost every architectural scenario/situation where I'd like to apply the language has been covered. I expect that this book is not only great for beginners in Archimate, but will also serve as an excellent reference for more experienced modellers.
