About Aromatherapy Aromatherapy is a holistic therapy that uses pure essential oils to positively influence the mind and body and to enhance emotional and physical well-being. Essential oils are highly concentrated extracts from the aromatic part of the plant. They are wholly natural molecular substances which when diffused in the air are transmitted to the part of the brain that controls memory and emotional response. When used topically they are highly effective due to their ability to help stimulate the body's natural ability to heal. Plants that are indigenous to an area are generally of higher quality than those commercially grown elsewhere. The weather and environmental growing conditions affect the quality of the harvest. Suggested Use: Essential oil is diluted in Jojoba and ready to apply. Some traditional uses are to place a few drops of oil on the palms, rub together, cup over nose and breathe deeply; use in the bath (5-10 drops); apply directly to the feet or over pulse points. After applying the oil, carefully light a candle and meditate in a way you are accustomed. Try this ritual for 7 days. How To Use Essential Oils Because essential oils are highly concentrated, they need to be used with care. Apply them by the drop. The general rule is to dilute them with carrier oils such as jojoba or sweet almond, or an unscented lotion or cream. Select essential oils with similar properties and blend them together to create your own unique aromas and therapies. Bath: Add no more than 8-10 drops to your bath. Use less if your skin is sensitive. Stir the water briskly to disperse evenly. For a relaxing bath try Lavender, Marjoram, Neroli or Relaxing. Massage: Add 10-20 drops of essential oils per ounce of carrier oil. Use the lesser amount for sensitive skin, children and the elderly. Mix well. Inhalation: Put a few drops of undiluted oils on a tissue and waft under your nose as desired. Carry it with you or place the tissue on your pillow at night. Skin Care: Add 10-20 drops of essential oils per ounce of carrier oil, unscented lotion or cream. Dilute further for children, the elderly, or if skin is sensitive. Mix well before using. Dry Skin - Rose, Neroli, Geranium, Palmarosa Oily Skin - Lavender, Carrot Seed, Cypress, Bergamot, Ylang Ylang Aged Skin - Carrot Seed, Frankincense Blemishes – Clary Sage, Bergamot, Niaouli, Clearer Skin Hair Care: Add essential oils of choice to unscented natural shampoos and conditioners. Normal - Lavender, Rosemary Dry - Geranium, Sandalwood Oily - Cedarwood, Lemongrass, Rosemary Head Lice - Tea Tree, Head Lice B’Gone Freshen Rooms: Essential oils make ideal room fresheners. Add 20 drops per ounce of water in spray mist bottle. Place undiluted oils in a diffuser or add to a simmering potpourri pot with water. Replenish as necessary. In the Bedroom - Put a few drops on a tissue and place near your pillow at night. For relaxation try Lavender, Marjoram or Roman Chamomile, Relaxing or Sleepy Time. To create a romantic mood try Ylang Ylang, Rose, Jasmine, Patchouli, Flirtation or Romantic Nights. Try Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Basil, Niaouli, Tea Tree, or Breathe Blend to help with congestion. In the Kitchen - Put a few drops of Lemon and Eucalyptus in your soft soap by the kitchen sink. Mix well. Use Lemon, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Bacteria Fighter or Household Purifier in rinse water when wiping the table or working surfaces. Add any of the citruses to your dishwater for a natural zing. Soak your washcloths and dishtowels in a mixture of Lemon, Lavender and Tea Tree before washing. House Plants: To fight aphids naturally, spray your plants with a mixture of water and a few drops each of Basil and Lemongrass. Laundry: Add a few drops of your favorite scent to the final rinse. Make sure you add oils to the water and never directly on the clothes. Dry on low heat. Or, put oils on a clean cloth and include with other items in the dryer.
