A slow burn Samurai/Western classic
Apart from a few minor changes here and there, this is basically a (very) faithful beat for beat retread of the Clint Eastwood classic but set in Japan's remote Northern region, so if you liked/disliked that version then you'll know what to expect. If you do decide to take the plunge though, you won't be disappointed, as just like the original version this film is a masterpiece. Ken Watanabe is a likeable lead character and is given good support from the rest of the relatively unknown (to me at least) cast, although the main villain wasn't quite as memorable or vicious as Gene Hackman's character in the original. The action, when it comes, is a mixture of swordplay & gunfire and doesn't disappoint either, so if you're looking for a decent Samurai flick then you can't go far wrong with this one.

one to watch
As with most cultures different to your own once you get an understanding of the differences things get clearer. I was pleasantly surprised at how this film kept my attention. There was only one point in the film which I felt my attention sort of wondered a little but as with most subtitled films you have to be focussed with the reading. the whole story flowed and and the fight scenes where great really enjoyed the film and if you have watched the film with clint eastwood in it youll love this film too

Quite faithful adaptation of the Clint Eastwood classic.
While i enjoyed this it was quite faithful and didn't really add much to the original. I did learn that Japan had it's own indigenous population but apart from that, being set in Japan didn't add anything that Eastwood hadn't already included.

Stunning
More of an adaptation than a remake - like seeing a favourite Shakespeare play reimagined. Visually sumptuous and keeps the darkness of the original. Recommended.

Typical Japanese samurai film, but set later without any flamboyant costumes.
A typical Japanese drama, part samurai but set later than the Shogun ere and without any flamboyant costumes. A tale of guilt and futility. Plenty of killing. Good if you like Japanese films but heavy as is usual with the genre.
