Encaustic Mixed Media: Innovative Techniques and Surfaces for Working With Wax

A great book with new ways of approaching encaustics. Definitely got my creativity flowing.

Seggebruch never skimps on the details. This book continues her tradition of detailed step-by-step instructions and fabulous photos of every important step. And mixed-media is not just a buy-me term for this work. She shows how to use pretty much anything you can find around the house to make beautiful encaustic works- 2D and 3D. I have only one criticism, and it applies to her previous book, Encaustic Workshop, as well. She does not include any safety information. I feel like putting that in all CAPS. Safety is a major concern in encaustic work. Not because you can burn the house down either. Wax fumes can kill. My first teacher put herself in the hospital and may have done permanent damage to her lungs. No one should be teaching encaustic without including a chapter's worth of information on how to work safely. Every project should include safety reminders. Seggebruch writes as if there is no safety issue at all. I can only hope that this horrible lapse doesn't lead to someone's life-changing disaster.

EXACTLY the book I was looking for on the encaustic subject! It’s an intensely inspiring book cover to cover. This publisher always does a great job, but this book is OUTSTANDING. Great job to the author, editors, and creative team. There are so many creative avenues they explore that in turn launch you into so many new ideas. It’s a very well-rounded book speaking as both a working artist and former book designer and art director for similar books. Great book!

Wasn’t as helpful as I would have liked!

Awesome book. I love adding to my art collection. I was not disappointed in the photos and passages discussing each art form and subject matter. Very art inspiring and motivating for creativity.

OMG! This book is amazing! The instructions are wonderful. The pictures are fabulous. When I first read about encaustic mixed media I thought that this wouldn't be for me. Patricia has done such an amazing job that it she makes you feel like it is just another relaxing media to play and have fun with. I liked it so much I immediately purchased her Encaustic workshop book.

I own a lot of art books, and this one is set to become a favorite; not just for the techniques, which are described clearly and precisely, but also because I find the images inspiring. I'll be using this book when I want specific information, and flipping through the pages via Kindle Cloud when I'm looking for a visual pick-me-up. Letting my eyes roam through it starts me thinking about colour, patterns, mark-making; all the things a visual artist needs. It's well written, beautifully illustrated and just a really lovely book. I don't usually give product reviews but this book has a wealth of great information in it. This book is a must have for encaustic artists. It's very inspiring and comprehensive. The author is extremely creative and is not afraid to try new techniques...I keep asking myself, what hasn't she tried? I know I will be referring to this book often and I can't wait to incorporate the techniques on my own compositions. If I had to choose only one book on encaustic painting (I have several) that I thought was the best, this would be the one.

I would have preferred the text to be more geared solely on explanation of the different encaustic methods being illustrated. I just thought the writer embossed the explanations a bit too much with her own personal family/ life illustrations and thoughts, ie. "Blame it on having four boys in six years,"when talking about flexibility. Or, "I am blessed to still possess this old machinist's letterpress from my dad -just don't tell my oldest brother!" However, that's my personal preference and undoubtedly other readers appreciate these little personal snippets. What I did find helpful were the sequential series of photos demonstrating clearly ( in most cases), each step of each technique. I know how difficult it is to really demonstrate such techniques due to the tactile and potentially multi layered nature of the medium and I find trying to photograph encaustic pieces a real challenge to visually explain all the textural innuendos of each piece. This book manages to resolve this difficulty in the majority of images.

Interessant boek voor de liefhebber van encaustic. Er komen veel technieken aan bod en alles wordt goed uitgelegd. Ik vindt een aanrader.
