Q: I lost one of the two plastic pins that hold the 2 pieces together. How can I (can I?) get a replacement?

I have know way of knowing but you could use some good adhesive to attach as one. Once glued you can not undo.

Q: can you attach the two pieces in both directions-ie normal in an "S" configuration, or attach in the opposite direction "C" configuration?

Yes, this item can be put into either a C or S configuration.

Q: Can I get replacements for the pins that hold the two pieces together?

I am not sure about getting replacement pins, but mine broke in half within 2 hours of putting it together, so I never put the replacement they sent together at all and just use the 2 pieces separately.
