The desciption seems (vaguely) to indicate that this"1/4 inch" drive set is only good for metric applications. Is this the case?

Wera tools are top quality tools. Wera socket wrenches come in 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2"; and they have metric sockets. Many nuts are metric sockets, and SAE sockets are getting increasingly rare. Even American cars are made with metric sockets. I think the only retail source of SAE sockets is Sears Craftsman, and I haven't bought any Sears Craftsman tools for years. Usually I buy from Snap On, and rarely I buy from Home Depot. You might find SAE tools on the websites selling used tools, but I haven't bought from them since I worked in Europe.

Where are wera products manufactured?

Wera is in Germany, and it manufactures its tools in Europe. The story I like is they are manufactured in Czechoslovakia, but Czechoslovakia dissolved into the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic on 1 January 1993. I prefer Snap-On Tools and Wera tools. I was the commanding officer of United States Air Force (USAF) and joint service units, but also I was an auto mechanic. Professional tools kept me working on top quality automobiles, but I literally saw other military people borrow my tools so that they could hit them with hammers, and I threw them out of the military automobile hobby shops. Amazon does sell excellent products, BUT some companies refuse to honor their warranties and guarantees on tools purchased through Amazon because they don't know how Amazon obtained them. I'm fussy about what I buy from Amazon, and I keep them in my locked toolbox in my locked garage. Rarely I'll buy my tools from Home Depot's website because too many customers STEAL parts from tools displayed in Home Depot's "bricks and mortar" stores.
