Informal Reading Inventory: Preprimer to Twelfth Grade (What’s New in Education)

I have used this book many times since ordering it. It is a great resource that provides both effective inventories and very well laid out directions for usage. Each inventory may be used as a whole for a complete look into a child's reading strengths and weaknesses, or may also be used to pinpoint growth in particular areas such as fluency or comprehension, by utilizing separate sections of the inventory.Recommendation? The book is a great resource, but is printed on very flimsy paper. I recommend photocopying onto heavier weight paper and placing in a binder. I would also recommend laminating the student reading selections.I would recommend this to any reading teacher or reading specialist. If being used by a classroom teacher who has not had training in how to correctly use reading assessments, I would make a recommendation that they either get professional development training on the intended usage of this assessment, or use something else. This is a diagnostic assessment and should never ever be tied to "a grade" for students.

I was first introduced to this reading level assessment tool in college while working on a reading endorsement. It is an easy and effective way to determine where your students are in terms of reading skills and comprehension. It is a low-tech, pencil and paper test give in three parts (Sight words, oral comprehension and aural comprehension)in which you, the teacher can quickly check off known sight words and answers to comprehension questions. Comprehension questions cover main idea, characters and general knowlege. Student read a passage so you can determine reading strategies that are used or missing. It is a great way to diagnose reading problems and determine how to diferentiate instruction for your students. I love this tool better than any computer program I have used in the classroom so far. I highly recommend this book.

I am amazed at how much information this inventory tells me about my readers. Well worth the cost.

required teaching tool

This book is worth the money. I have used it in my tutoring business as well as a long term substitute in order to identify a student's reading ability. Very detailed. It has graded word lists, graded reading passages up to grade 12. Excellent.

Good book!

This is one of the best teaching tools. You will reused this book over and over again when evaluating a person's reading competency. This can be used by all age groups (including adult reading)

This book has very useful tests in it. I tore the tests out so I may need to buy another one. If you need some diagnostic reading tests, this is the book you want.
