A triumphant return!
Even though it's been a while since Matt Mahaffey has released new sElf tunes, it's apparent he's been biding his time, crafting some amazing pop ditties to unleash on us. Every song is catchy, but also to his credit, none of the 6 songs on this EP sound similar. It really is a great intro to sElf's music. For a guy who's put out so much material in his career, it's really phenomenal that he can keep things fresh after 20 years. This is no nostalgia trip, this is the real deal.

Each track is a candy earworm and some of the best pieces sElf has put out
These songs have had a joyful welcome to my collection. Each track is a candy earworm and some of the best pieces sElf has put out. Matt Mahaffey has all the elements of subtly catchy tunes down to a pat on this EP. The lyrics are whimsical and unique, the little added melodies are magic, and each track is so clearly sElf's distinct sound you'll instantly want more. You will not be disappointed, it's well worth the money.

Matt Mahaffey can do anything and make it sound cool. I love this album
Okay, just want to point something out here - first one to review. Matt Mahaffey can do anything and make it sound cool. I love this album. I freaking love this from start to finish. Did I say I love this? Please go out and buy Super Fake Nice. Self has been under appreciated since the beginning. I hope this is the start of recognition that should have been bequeathed a long time ago.

Mahaffey all growed up
Mahaffey is a master of his craft. He's still got the trademark wackiness, but it's more under the surface, tamed and honed from his time with Beck, perhaps. More tuneful than the earlier albums, more refined, way more influence of Prince and later-period Beck.

sElf is back!
sElf's Super Fake Nice is long overdue for the fans of sElf. I loved the "Runaway" track especially because they played it live on Jimmy Kimmel a few weeks ago. sElf's thing is to be experimental, not dull or repetitive, and they never sound like anybody else, even when they cover well-known material.

Four Stars
If you like Self's other music, you'll enjoy this one too. It's just damn short - only 6 songs!
