Great tool for a window box gardener.

Part of my recipe for successfully germinating seeds inside when it's too cold outside. Bought the block maker and special blocking soil thru the manufacturer, but everything else in the picture comes from Amazon. Just mix the soil(you can make your own recipe too- just search) with water until it clumps together, press into the block, and release the cube where you want to germinate. I used the Hydrofarm windowsill kit for space reasons and the matching heat mat to help my peppers do their thing.It's important to not move the blocks until you start seeing roots on the sides(a benefit vs. plastic cells) because they are delicate at this stage. Just keep them watered from below daily and I also used a fine spray-mister to keep the upper structure moist. The greatest benefit to this vs. traditional plastic seed cells - other than reduced waste - is the smaller chances for transplant shock when it comes time for moving to a larger home for your veggies.If the seedlings are not in a south-facing window you will need some source of lighting. I used the Hydrofarm Jumpstart T5 strip light and it worked great. However, this review is not for that and you can find many here for all the parts I've mentioned. I chose to review this particular item due to the lack of reviews and general lack of information about soil-blocking. It was easy for a novice like myself and worked well for the small scale growing I do. They make units that will press multiple cubes at once and even different sizes for 'nesting' the blocks as they grow(this is the middle size).Finally, the manufacturer was very informative when I asked questions and made this an excellent experience. It was shipped fast along with the special soil(sold separately) and i look forward to using it again soon(I'm thinking tomatoes this time). Give it a shot and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Just don't forget to rinse off the blocker after use so it stays clean and ready for use!Jae
