Great scanner with pro features — minor setup issue
The ThinkCar 689 OBD2 scanner is a powerful and reliable diagnostic tool. The ease of use is excellent, even for someone who isn’t a pro technician. Navigation is straightforward, and the interface is clean. It picked up codes quickly and provided clear data across multiple systems. I did run into a minor issue during the update process and had to reset the system once, but after that, everything worked perfectly. If you’re familiar with basic tech setup, it shouldn’t be a problem. The build quality feels solid, and it seems tough enough for daily shop use or to live in a toolbox. While it is a bit pricey, I honestly think it’s worth the investment — whether you’re a professional or a backyard mechanic. You’re getting deep diagnostics and solid performance without needing dealership-level gear. ⸻ Q&A: Q: Is this scanner easy to use for beginners or just pros? A: It’s user-friendly enough for beginners. The menu system is clean, and scanning is straightforward. Q: Did you experience any issues during setup or updates? A: Yes, the update glitched once and I had to reset it. After that, no issues at all. Q: Is it worth the higher price tag? A: Yes — it’s packed with features, reads a wide range of systems, and feels built to last.

Inconsistent data streams
I bought this product hoping it would work, however what I found was just the opposite. When I plugged this in to my 2000 f350, the auto vin search didn't work, so I entered the information manually, (not a big deal). I went to actuations (which is the bidirectional part or tests that this tool claims it can do), "not supported" was the message that came up. Which is a real bummer, cause that reduces this unit to nothing more than something that can read live data streams, which is helpful but severely cripples is usefulness. Next I went to live data streams on the PCM. What i found is the data streams where inconsistent. They would spike up, down, or drop out when viewing them. The pictures show this. The pickup is idling during all this with no check engine light on, running good. This is my daily driver. If you look at the pictures you'll notice that two of the data streams are engine oil temp. and transmission fluid temp., both of which is impossible to spike like that. Also note that I have other scanners that show no spikes in these streams at all, which would be consistent with a good running, no cel, daily driver. So I emailed ThinkCar. I sent them multiple different tests and screen shots. Due to the type of issue I was having they escalated my problem to the engineers. After a week of back and forth, this is thier final email. Dear customer: Hello, I'm sorry for any inconvenience caused to you. This car is a PWM protocol model and cannot download AB data. According to the log, you select the data stream and verify that the software and the special inspection calculation are consistent, and the data stream is consistent. I suggest you choose a test that is more accurate. Thank you, Overall, my experience with thinkcar is not a good one, and when they simply try to blame me for not using thier tool right is thier solution, is disappointing. They claim consistent data when I clearly showed them the opposite. This tool that can't do actuations, had inconsistent data streams, and not good customer service renders this tool nothing more than a expensive frustration.

Easy to use, programs keys, great support
Used this to program a second key for my 2011 ford escape. I am pleased with the automatic scan function and the report it generates. It practically paid for itself just programming a key. UPDATE had a weird glitch it was displaying the wrong voltage, emailed support , got a response in one day and a fix in two .

OBD2 scanner
For the price when I bought OBD2 scanner was reasonable for the use of the unit. The most important capability is the free lifetime updates. I have other more expensive units that requires annual updates with a fee. This unit can do similar capabilities to others. I’ve used this unit to several cars and compared it others and gave the similar codes.

Since receiving I have only tested basic features like scanning for error codes on a Volvo EX30, Fiat 500 and BMW F30 which this performed fine on all 3. It also allowed me to change parameters and code features like disabling stop start. Then out of no where my F30 kept going into limp mode and I used this to attempt to diagnose the issue. Codes were pointing to a fuel pump issue but it was a rather generic code (the fault of BMW not the scanner) but I was then able to monitor the live readings of the HPFP and it was clear that was at fault. Let my garage know and they confirmed it and so saved me a diagnostics charge. A really brilliant tool for those who are repairing cars as a hobby/living.

The Thinkcar ThinkScan 689 a must have tool for car enthusiasts and professionals alike. Its advanced functionality picks up issues cheaper scanners miss, such as detecting a glow plug problem in my Peugeot - The bidirectional capability allows you to perform active tests and send commands to vehicle systems. - With WiFi for effortless updates, an inbuilt Chrome browser for instant fault research, and the ability to email reports directly from the unit, it's a real time-saver. - The touchscreen is responsive, the VIN scan works flawlessly, and the battery life is excellent. - Overall, a top-quality tool with a robust build, steering wheel hanger, and a protective case for storage and transport. Lifetime updates included, making it a worthy investment for any car tinkerer.

Really brilliant diagnostic kit. East to plug and play. Options to identify car make and model. Brought up old cleared faults as well as new faults linked to the engine management light that annoyingly appeared on our Mercedes. Worked out quickly what it was linked to, save a very expensive garage trip. I havent had much comparison to alternative products but I was very pleased at the user friendly interface and the design and build of the device itself. Comes in a nice carry case too
