Using these for heavy metal guitar monitors with headphone amp
I bought the 80 ohm version. I wanted to get a mix of sound quality and usability.A few things:1. The need to power them with a headphone amp is only 100% true for clean signals. If you have a pedal or effects chain, it will provide enough to power to make these headphones sound great. You can hear the sound on clean, it's just low and not very exciting.2. The headphone amp is fantastic for a reason that a lot of people don't talk about: you can turn the gain and volume down significantly on the source to get a super "clean" signal into the headphone amp and THEN amplify that signal into the headphones. This makes the entire signal so much higher quality.3. They are very comfortable, I played for hours with "hot ears" or neck pain4. The frequency response is fantastic. From the lowest lows to the highest highs, it sounds great all way up and down the spectrum.5. I have yet to hear any distortion at all from these, even at very high volumes. Frankly with the headphone amp it goes so much higher than I would every need it.Definitely recommended!Update 2 months later:Still very strong recommendation. I am slowly becoming more and more of an audiophile (disclaimer) but I'm still pretty grounded. The main difference between a cheap set of headphones and a higher quality ones is in the overall clarity and "exposition" of the frequencies. Simply put, you hear more of the music, more details, more bass, more mids, more trebles. My other cheaper headphones sound like they have a soft layer over them, muting some of the sound/detail.Since I got the 80 ohm version, I definitely recommended getting a headphone amp for them. I got the cheapest one off amazon but it still makes a noticeable difference. To put it in subject numerical terms, with my old headphones I could hear about 65% of the music, with the Beyers without an amp I'm at about 75% of the music, with an amp I'm closer to 95% to 100% of the music ( I would probably need to hear it live in studio to see if I'm truly hearing 100% of the music so take that with a grain of salt). It's still the same songs and everything you can just hear "more". Also, going through my laptop without the amp, they just don't get loud enough at full volume, and I'm not one of those "blow out my eardrums" types of people, I just want to hear it all.

Very good!
Bought as a Christmas gift for my husband, after a long research. Everything that was said good in the reviews are so true, my husband, whom records music loves the headphones! They are everything he needs.

Incredible sound, almost incredible design, and not so incredible packaging.
Purely from an audio quality standpoint these are possibly the best sounding headphones for the price, the build quality is composed of premium materials and the headphones can easily be worn for hours on end even out of the box with plush cloud like cushions. The design itself comes off as a more studio-like appearance and the markings and lettering are clean and follow a subtle minimalist design. The headphones are modular to some degree with the leather-feeling headband being easily removable with 4 snap in buttons, but a detachable cable for the $150 price tag would be a welcome improvement as these are still sold in higher quantity than the newer and much more expensive dt1770. Portability is definitely not a strong suit for these headphones as the exposed wire that connects the left to right ear cup is paired with a non rotating (robust) but plastic clamp that allows the headphone size to be adjusted. The headphone cups cannot be pivoted to any position other than the standard being-worn position. My personal complaint with these is a problem that i rarely comment on as most premium products are seemingly over packaged when shipped, however these seemed to be barely protected during potential shipping. The Beyerdynamic product box itself has no headphone shaped foam or other material that conforms to the shape of the headphones, just a single piece of cardboard that appears to be slanted by design for a space saving reason with the box itself being the only protection for the headphones while being shipped. This packaging design caused my pair to be slightly curved off axis to the left regarding the headband when not worn on the head as i first took them out of the product box. This however doesn't appear to be a return-worthy flaw and i am assuming this will revert pack to a symmetrical design with continued use as this is only my second day wearing them.Regarding audio quality, as expected they're unmatched in my opinion. They have a bit more life than the Audiotechnica m50x i have also used an enjoyed while still staying true to the original intent of the producer. All the elements of sound can be separated with a fantastic sound stage for closed back headphones which i need for my general louder ambient volume apartment while not irritating anyone else at any hour. The 80ohm version can be run to satisfaction by most modern laptops but a Dac or Amp should be chosen before stepping up to the 250ohm version. They're not perfect, some needed design updates have been addressed by newer models from Beyerdynamic's own lineup such as the dt1770s, but as long as they aren't being used for daily commute over-ear headphones i can happily recommend the dt770 pros for anyone building a home studio or looking to seriously upgrade from retail store/ apple basic earbuds.

Still Sound Good
These have been around pro studios for years. And there are "better" phones, newer designs, but I like the mid-range of these units better than some of the newer designs. If you're looking for a lot of sss-boom these might disappoint but the mid-range clarity and solid imaging still work in the studio.
