Does the griddle part come out so it can be washed?

No, you have to wash it with a wet rag and soap. But it wipes out easy

How is the top supposed to get washed? I assumed you can't put the whole machine in the sink?

I wipe mine down with wet sponge or paper towel. I don’t do sausage or meat in it so use both top spots for eggs. I just spray a bit of oil on top and smear around. Nothing, nothing sticks. I use silicone type utensils to remove the egg and toasted bread or muffin. I don’t butter the bread first although you could and that bottom tray comes out and crumbs easy to remove. You could add a lite bit of soapy water to your cleaning as long as the cord is unplugged. Mine looks good as new after several uses,, even with cheese added on top of egg. Am seriously thinking ou mixing up the egg first and then pouring a tiny bit in and try to make a wrap og egg to put around an asparagus spear or other yummy just to fancy things up. Hope this helps. You know on TV a chef was retiring his egg pan after all the years he used it and he said he had never washed it. Just kept using it over and over.
