Jazz Teacher's Review
As always, Aebersold delivers with this installment of play along books. There are some "easy" songs in there in terms of melody playing, however, I'm not sure I would call the improvisational aspect to soloing over these songs "easy".The great part about these books is they show you what scale to play with what chord, but it doesn't approach skating at all, which is where a student should start (ie Bb blues, just using the Bb blues scale over every change instead of changing scales with every chord.)An adult student (say at least 17) could use this book on their own, but the larger concepts would be lost on someone with limited knowledge of music theory. Therefore this book is best used with an instructor. It's very handy if you want to play these charts with different instruments because it contains concert charts in both treble and bass cleff, as well as Bb and Eb charts. The CD aspect of this series is the best part because it allows a student to work on their own. They don't have to find friends to play along with them, nor do they have the pressure to play a solo in front of a class or peers. When I was a kid I'd play with these books all the time. They were very helpful.Bottom line: this is a little too advanced theory wise for "easy" improvisation. Learning out of this book on your own would be difficult if you weren't familiar with every major scale and chord theory.
